Plot[]
Part One: Although Elsie is quietly proud of the car, she won't admit as much to Gary, who tries to convince her that it's a sound investment and will be cheap to run. Dickie and Audrey enjoy cleaning up No.3. Ena enjoys hearing about their plans and gives them a gift of a mixing bowl. Stan drinks with window cleaner I-spy Dwyer. Jack and Annie are unhappy that their windows haven't been touched for four weeks. Len introduces Elsie to Vince Boyle who tells her how his son can't afford to run his own big car. Hilda is taken aback when Stan tells her he's bought I-spy Dwyer's round for £45 but is mollified when he tells her that she's the wife of the managing director of his new enterprise. Dickie and Audrey go shopping for a double bed and are taken aback at the prices. Elsie pushes Emily in to driving her in her car for her. Mr Dean tells Len that Ronald Wilde is willing to give him a new contract, but only if he sacks Stan.
Part Two: Ken and Val encounter Dickie and Audrey in the furniture shop. Val also thinks the prices are high. Stan plucks up the courage to resign from the yard, thinking he'll be letting Len down. He doesn't realise he's saved a relieved Len the task of sacking him. Emily helps Elsie go through the running costs of the car. PC Conway tells Elsie that the car needs a new set of tyres as the present ones are bald. Ena shoots down Hilda's attempts to lord it over the neighbours. Gary looks for Elsie and finds out from Dickie that she's gone off for a driving lesson from Stan. Jack thinks Stan will find it difficult working for himself instead of having a boss pushing him. At 10.00pm, Hilda looks for Stan and Ena enjoys telling her he went off with Elsie five hours earlier. Hilda's livid. As it grows dark, Elsie and Stan run out of petrol on the moors near Blackburn.
