Plot[]
Part One: Albert buys a pile of beers from the Rovers as he's having a group of old comrades round to talk about the Battle of the Lys. He tells a searching Gordon that Les isn't in there. Elsie goes in the corner shop and sees that Maggie looks troubled but she claims she only has a headache. Gordon tells his mum that Les wasn't in the pub. She tells him that he's to make allowances for his father. Jenny drops Dennis in it by telling Minnie that he's going to take her to the zoo. Aaron Moore, Fred Hartley and Jim Watson turn up at No.1. Fred recognises Minnie and asks her to join them but, claiming her prior engagement, she sets off with Dennis to the zoo. Maggie is relieved when Les returns after just having a walk. Ken joins Albert and his comrades and take notes of their reminiscences. Aaron begins to boast about his own nephew's writing skills, annoying Albert, and isn't long before the men begin bickering about the specific details of the battle. In anger, Aaron smashes Albert's old prize mug from Reims when he slams it down on the table.
Part Two: A moment of peace breaks out between Les and Gordon as they play chess, but it isn't long before Gordon brings a chill down between them again with pointed comments. Ken finds it difficult to keep the four men on track. He asks a somewhat silent Jim for his memories, and he reveals that Albert missed the battle because he'd got lost in the fog whilst being on patrol. Jenny offers to help Elsie cook when she invites them to tea. Albert is in a foul mood as his three supposed friends take their leave. He blames Ken for making him look foolish. Dennis and Jenny think they have No.5 to themselves. Dennis tells Jenny he loves her and they should name the day. Elsie isn't pleased to see a cocky Ray Langton on the street and tells him he'll be gone when Len returns. She's amused when Ray tells her that he's planning to apply for the plumber's job at Fairclough and Booth.
