Plot[]
Part One: Elsie hasn't told Dennis about the failure of her marriage whilst also harbouring suspicions about her son's claim to be married. She pumps him for details, pointing out that he has no ring or photos to show her and calls him out as a liar. She is sharp with Jenny but the girl more than stands her ground with her. Len can't understand why Jerry is being so off with him. Miklos and Emily have his boarding flat to themselves. She worries that he's getting too passionate with her and asks to be taken home. Dennis think they should tell Elsie that they're not married but before they can say anything, his mother forces a confession from them. Unimpressed by their lies, she tells them they can't sleep together. Miklos brings Emily back to the shop where David is still reading up on Australia as he thinks it's the right place to bring up their child. Irma realises Emily and Miklos are kissing as it's gone quiet downstairs. A grumpy Dennis settles down for the night in one of the new chairs. Elsie orders Jenny upstairs and insists they're being bolted in as they can't be trusted.
Part Two: The next day, Hilda is delighted when Irma tells her they're not going to Australia and that she might be pregnant again. David gets a letter telling him that a football job he applied for in Australia is his, commencing in two months' time and they want his reply. Dennis tells Elsie she can't tie him to her apron strings just when it suits her. Irma realises they'd be stupid not to go to Australia when she sees the picture of the house that goes with the job and agrees to the move, but worries about telling her mother. Elsie tells Dennis he's in no position to get married and he retorts that he has a job interview that morning. Hilda cries to Stan after hearing about the emigration. They work out how to make more money to go there themselves. Jerry asks Miklos's confidential advice about putting in a tender on the maisonettes' construction. Dennis announces he's got a job selling hairdressing sundries. When Elsie expresses contempt, Jenny gives her cheek back, raising Elsie's hackles.
