Plot[]

Part One: Len tells a sympathetic Val that Elsie's marriage is over for good. Ken stops Irma passing on Hilda's unfounded gossip to Annie. Irma suspects that David is up to something behind his back, but Ken won't say what it is. David returns from a five-a-side match, telling them that he never had a twinge. Irma hits him in anger for putting himself at risk. He tells her that he wants to play professionally again - for a team in Australia. He has a friend out there and wants to discover what their prospects are for emigrating. She refuses point-blank to go. Hilda is upset to hear of the plan. Emily and Miklos make plans to meet that night. Val wonders if she should write to Linda about her mother. Hearing that Stan is spending time in The Flying Horse, Jack winds up Hilda into thinking that she and Stan ought to emigrate as well. Emily plans a Hungarian meal for Miklos. A delivery man and his assistant bring the second of Dennis's new chairs to No.9. Having had enough, Ken and Val try to dump it on No.11.

Part Two: Elsie has tided herself and her house up. Val passes on Irma's speculation that Dennis and Jenny might be getting married. Becoming her old self again, Elsie is amused at the idea. Irma insists to David he can go on his own but she is undermined when Hilda says she and Stan will be coming as well. Miklos likes his meal but says he doesn't need to be reminded of home as he has no ties to anywhere. Emily realises she doesn't either. Irma is hardly talking to David and Hilda. Elsie ventures into the Rovers with Len. A bitter Irma asks outright how Steve is, prompting Elsie into almost having an outburst until Len steps in and quietly announces to everyone that Elsie has come home. Elsie is touched when Annie offers her a "welcome home" drink. Miklos passionately kisses Emily. Back home, Elsie realises she prefers the cut and thrust of her neighbours' gossip to the false niceness of people in Boston. Len reminds her that Dennis is returning with Jenny, and he thinks his mother is 3,000 miles away.
