Plot[]
Part One: Jenny asks Len to intervene between Dennis and Maurice but Len points out that they've been outside for ten minutes now and nothing serious could have happened. Outside the two men push each other without any serious blows being exchanged until Dennis tears an angry Maurice's suit. They return, with Dennis sporting a supposed bloodied nose, but masterfully making Maurice apologise to Jenny. Len sees through the ruse and Dennis quietly confesses to him that he threatened to tell the management that Maurice is on the fiddle. David upsets Hilda when he jokes that she's done something she feels guilty about. Hilda writes Stan a note telling him of her unfaithfulness and that she's given George up and slips it in his jacket pocket in the Rovers. He tears it up without reading it. Dennis enjoys Jenny's adulation about his bravery. He receives a call from the operator to say a call from Elsie in Boston has been booked for 4.00pm tomorrow.
Part Two: The next morning, Hilda can't find the note in Stan's jacket. He is hung-over after a night out with Len. He claims he burnt the note accidentally, much to Hilda's relief. Demolishers Jimmy Gibson and Miklos Zadic turn up to recce the factory. Jimmy tries to chat Lucille up in the corner shop but she falls for Hungarian foreman Miklos. Jenny and Dennis write letters with their latest news to their mothers, flirting as they do so. George tells Hilda it was providence that Stan didn't read her note. Agnes Greenwood calls on Stan, worried that George also tried to confess to her - something he's never done before. The two are enjoying the attention their spouses are giving to them. Agnes lights up one of her tipped cigarettes. Dennis and Jenny dress up for the phone call. Len and Albert join them as Elsie comes through on the line. Dennis tells her about Jenny. Len tries to get her to talk about herself, but she puts the phone down suddenly, worrying him. Agnes leaves and Stan thinks he's hidden all the evidence of her visit before Hilda arrives. She's caught a glimpse of Agnes leaving the house. Hilda sees the cigarette tip and suspects an affair.
