Plot[]
Part One: Miss Anderson realises that Irma doesn't know that David is seeing her. She tries to make him see that they shouldn't adopt as he'd only be using the child as a stopgap until Irma became pregnant again. Having seen similar situations before, she is sure that things will sort themselves out in the end. Ken is tired after a day's work and not looking forward to tutoring John but they need the money. Jerry begins to plan his and Len's Christmas dinner. Ena refuses to join Minnie, Albert and Wally for an OAP afternoon at No.11. David returns and confesses to Irma where he's been. She thanks him for trying and suggests they try fostering. Ken finds teaching John is hopeless as he's too thick. Dennis is annoyed to find Wally and Albert occupying the back room and asks for more privacy. Wally says he feels that he's not wanted and will be leaving. Dennis worries that he's got nowhere to go.
Part Two: Irma tells Ken and Val that they've advertised themselves as foster parents. Ken feels they're doing it for the wrong reason. Lucille confirms that John wasn't very bright when they were at school together. Ken decides to give up tutoring him. Wally packs his bags and departs, making Dennis feel guilty. Mr and Mrs Potter call at No.9 with John to talk about Ken cancelling his coaching, thinking he's had a better offer. The Potters are angry when Ken says John will never pass his O-levels. They tell him they'll find another teacher. Albert and Minnie sing Dennis's praises for taking his grandad in, only for Ena to blurt out that the old man has gone, outraging them. However, she also reveals that Wally had already arranged somewhere else to live last night on Woodstock Street. Len and Jerry spot graffiti on the Rovers' ceiling. Albert arranges a tug-of-war between the Rovers and The Flying Horse on Christmas Day. Val begs Ken to give John another chance and he reluctantly agrees.
