Plot[]
Part One: Simon returns from Oakhill School raving to Leanne about its facilities. George asks Peter and Leanne to consider sending him there next year. Ted calls to see a pleased Gail but Joe is less happy to find him in the house. Becky tells Amy about her mother dying. Liz expresses her sympathies but Becky doesn't want any pity. Liz is shocked to hear that she was the only mourner present at the funeral, that she and her mother never got on, and she's not sorry she's died. Liz gently chides her for not telling Steve. Steve calls into The Flying Horse. Ken is angry to hear about the trip to Oakhill and lectures Peter about his obligations to society. Back home, Sally's pleased to have her family round her and that things are slowly returning to normality. Peter tells Ken that his son's education is his business. Disgusted with him, Ken goes out for a walk. Ted tells Joe he'd like his money back in a week's time. Joe lies and makes out it's no problem. Becky starts to cry as she reads a bedtime story to Amy.
Part Two: Ken returns home. Deirdre tells him to accept that life just isn't fair for some people. Kevin takes Bill and the girls for a drink while Sally's resting. Peter gives in and agrees to let Simon transfer to Oakhill for one year. George is thrilled. Ken accepts the situation through gritted teeth. Steve gets drunk in the Flying Horse. Two men he tries to talk to refuse his offer to go out for the night in Manchester. Leaving the pub, he tries to get on his bike, but he falls over and the machine lands on top of him, much to the amusement of passers-by. Joe announces to Gail that he's booked a few days for them back at the cottage where they spent their honeymoon in the Lakes. She's delighted. Steve arrives home by taxi to a lecture about his behaviour from Deirdre when she sees his drunken state. He finds Becky sitting alone in the darkened bar. He tells her that he's sorry he's been such a moron and they ask each other to try again. She tells him that she's pregnant and has known since New Year's Eve. Steve's gobsmacked as she leads him upstairs.
