Plot[]

Part One: Lucille and Jerry bicker about their trip to the pictures last night but agree to go out again. Len tells Jerry he regrets telling Steve about Elsie's lie. Steve keeps his counsel as offers to take Elsie to Birmingham but, feeling wretched, she insists on getting the train. Ken enjoys putting the act and bossing Irma when he calls into the shop. She goes along with the act, even when Ena insists that Ken did nothing wrong. Amy makes plans for Emily and Douglas's room and is horrified to discover they have found a flat. Annie worries about Lucille going out with Jerry, saying they're totally unsuited. Len visits Elsie and tells her that he told Steve the truth. She can't understand why her husband didn't say a word and says he's made of ice. Len tells her to stay, and sort matters out with him.

Part Two: Emily gets annoyed with Amy's condescending manner towards her and Douglas. He's firm that he's leaving. Amy accuses Emily of being cruel towards them both. He packs and leaves to shouts of derision from his devastated sister. Ken and Val laugh over what the neighbours think of their relationship. Annie calls at the yard and in a roundabout way says that she thinks that he and Lucille are entirely unsuited. Not understanding her meaning, he manages to assure her that Lucille's just a friend. Emily tells Douglas she knows he doesn't want a wife and he just wanted to escape, as she did once from her father. She tells him that he's free now, and although he'll be lonely at first in his flat, he can make it work. He's grateful to her. Steve finds Elsie still at home. She begs him to show some emotion. When she explains that they've been getting on each other's nerves, he tells her she should go. Hurt, she packs for Birmingham. Irma complains of pains. Ena tells David to phone the doctor quickly.
