Part One: Irma expects the midwife arriving for a check-up and takes time off from the shop to tidy up, annoying David. Steve wants to make arrangements to see the married quarters at the base but Elsie receives a letter from Linda telling her that she's ill and asking her to look after Paul in Birmingham. Elsie tells Steve she's going. Lucille gives Emily a message from Douglas saying he needs to see her. Elsie calls on Val, looking for Dennis who now has a temporary waiter job. She reveals that the letter is a lie concocted by her and Linda so she can get away from Steve for a bit. Val is tired of people asking about her black eye. Ena advises Val to let everyone believe Ken hit her and blindside the gossips. Len is worried when a subdued Elsie tells him she's going to Birmingham. At the hotel, Amy Preston shocks Douglas and Emily by saying she's looking forward to her living with them after their wedding.

Part Two: Ken and Val enjoy staging a row to confuse David. He departs the house utterly thrown, and leaving behind a very amused couple. Douglas is thrown by his sister's behaviour and thinks she's planning something. Emily tells him to leave the flat-hunting to her so she can get him away from Amy. Jack tells Len why Elsie is going to Linda's, leaving him more puzzled than ever. Irma doesn't feel well but claims she's better after a brandy. Ena and Irma are surprised when they realise Emily is flat-hunting. Irma is off with Ken for his behaviour towards his wife. He is thrown when Ena doesn't back up his innocence, and is further embarrassed when Val reveals a plaster over a scratch that Susan gave her on the cheek. Lucille asks Jerry to take her out, saying that people are always attracted to someone who is apparently spoken for. Len tells Steve the married quarters plan is a bad idea and he's received a letter from Ivan saying Linda is healthy and decorating Paul's room.
