Plot[]
Part One: Lucille thinks Jerry should follow Emily's example and spread his wings. Minnie tells Annie about Henry's offer, worrying that she'll be on her own if Ena goes to St. Annes. Hilda is fearful about Harry Lester doing the decorating, especially when he says that he's allergic to wallpaper paste. Elsie questions Steve about his mother's attitude towards him and he confesses that she sees him as something of a disappointment for only being a sergeant. Hilda finds that Harry has no tools and is going to cut the paper with a carving knife. He manages to talk his way out of her concerns. Douglas Preston calls into Gamma Garments for Emily and Lucille tries to get him to update his look. Emily stops her and is disappointed when he meekly goes along with her view. Albert gets Stan out of the Rovers as the decorating is going badly. Ena shocks Annie by saying that she hasn't definitely turned down Henry's offer.
Part Two: Harry completely ruins the decorating. Stan tries to defend him, but Hilda makes her displeasure clear. Harry does a runner when Stan demands his money back and Hilda makes him do the task himself. Ena is struck when Lucille tells her she'll have a new lease of life in St. Annes. Elsie tells May she's thinking of getting a job. Emily has Douglas round for a meal and self-consciously buys two bottles of lager for the event. Stan takes a break from decorating for a desperate pint or two. Ena goes back to St. Annes to tell Henry she's turning him down, as she's too old to change and is sticking to the friends she knows. She thanks him for being kind and admits that Alfred would never have grabbed the opportunities in life as he has. Steve tells Elsie he's taken a far-reaching decision. Albert sees Douglas in Gamma and tells Lucille he thinks he's seen him out with a woman he assumed was his wife.
