Plot[]
Part One: An upset Emily searches out Lucille, admitting to her that she was stood up by Douglas Preston. Henry Foster shows Ena into his comfortable house. She demands to know why he sent the flowers and money. Steve has taken his mother back to her hotel. Elsie wants him to send her packing as she thinks her new daughter-in-law is rubbish but Steve refuses. Henry tells Ena that back in the 1930s he took a job which should have been given to Alfred Sharples after both desperate men had spent long periods of time on the dole. She tells him that she doesn't want his conscience money. Stan meets up with Harry Lester, the cheap decorator. Jack recognises him from the July when he called into the Rovers selling a ladder to Annie and tries to warn Stan off him. Douglas Preston turns up in the pub, looking for Gamma Garments. Lucille takes him there. He is not what Emily expected but she takes him to her flat to get to know the nervous man. Steve tells Elsie she no longer lives in Coronation Street and she's got to match his class.
Part Two: Stan lies to Hilda that Harry cost £6 when he actually paid him £2/10 and he's pocketed the difference. Harry arrives to look over the house. Hilda quickly realises he's colour blind, and he admits he's a baker on night shifts. Minnie calls Ena pig-headed for not accepting Henry's money but she's furious that he stole her husband's job. Emmeline calls on Steve and finds out her daughter-in-law thinks the Tanners are toffee-nosed. She decides to speak to her and rings a taxi to take her to the street. Lucille thinks Douglas is fishy, but Emily insists he's just shy. Hilda makes arrangements for Harry to begin work but tells Stan she's not taken in by the man's blarney. Emmeline turns up in the Rovers and tells Elsie she's leaving her Steve to her. The two women agree they have to try to adjust to each other and Emmeline admits her son is an obstinate man before departing for America. Ena is surprised when Henry turns up the vestry and asks her to be his housekeeper in St Annes.
