Plot[]
Part One: A tired Irma tells Len that Stan went to Liverpool last night to look for Hilda. Emily tries to reassure her that they'll be a simple explanation. Elsie insists that Karen goes or that Dennis earns more money to pay for their guest's extra household expenses. Karen gets a job in a coffee bar on Deansgate in Manchester. She tells Dennis that Elsie spends too much on herself. He's nervous about the Town Hall official's visit. Val gets Peter and Susan ready before Ena takes them out. Lucille tries to avoid the Rovers and Annie's nagging. Dennis asks her to pose as his wife. David is worried for Irma. Dennis buys items to clean No.11 and bake a cake, astonishing David. Karen finds excuses not to help with the cleaning. Stan returns alone having searched all over Liverpool. The police ring him to say they want him to identify a woman's body. Len takes him to the police station.
Part Two: Albert dozes in No.9's back yard as Val hangs up the washing. Ena returns with the twins, telling Val that the woman's body was found in the canal. Dennis "borrows" the twins washing off No.9's line. Elsie isn't impressed with the cost of the cake that Karen has bought. As Steve takes Elsie out, Lucille turns up to play the part of "Steve Tanner"'s wife, for pay. Irma is on tenterhooks as she waits for news. Stan returns and says the body wasn't Hilda. Miss Knight arrives. The "Tanners" play their part of a recently married couple with "Steve"'s three-year old boy from a previous relationship and their willing au pair. Miss Knight spots that the children's clothes lying about are for girls. Emily insists that proper limited company business protocols are followed at Fairclough and Booth. For once, Stan wants to work as a distraction. Dennis and Lucille come up with excuses for the clothes. Miss Knight is satisfied with what she's seen and leaves. She goes to the yard to pass a report on another matter to Len and is introduced by chance to the real Steve there, thus realising she's been the victim of a deception.
