Plot

Part One: Late on Sunday night, Jack and Lucille await Annie's return from Paris, though she is late arriving. Karen Olsen rings Dennis, not happy with her digs. Word spreads that Annie is back. She is full of French affectations, and refuses a cup of tea, preferring to indulge in her new habit of a cognac for a nightcap. Lucille is unimpressed with her present of a book: La Folatrerie de Claude, though Annie admits she hasn't a clue what it's about. Jack likewise doesn't appreciate his beret which Annie got him to wear for his bowls matches. The next day, Elsie plans the wedding with Linda and a delighted Dot as matrons of honour. Dot reminds Elsie of all the other things she has to organise. Lucille shows Ken her book. He reads some passages and realises it's rather risqué. Steve and Dennis play poker and Dennis loses immediately. Karen interrupts them to say she's left her job and she's going to live with Dennis at No.11.

Part Two: Stan and Len take the mickey out of Jack's beret, annoying Annie. Jack has to cope with Annie making roast rabbit to a French recipe for his meal and playing French music all the time. Ken refuses to read any of the dirty passages of the book to Len and Ken. Hilda seems quiet when she fetches Stan for his dinner. Elsie is amused as a smitten Dennis gives Karen his meal and makes up the front room for her. Annie bores the residents with endless talk of France. Annie refuses Dennis's request to give Karen some hours behind the bar. Dennis and Irma are similarly interested in Ken reading some of the book to them and he strings them along until he gets to a word which he claims he doesn't know. Hilda is depressed that Stan doesn't want a proper garden. Albert tells her she should ask herself more often what she wants herself in life. To stay in the country, Karen gets Dennis to write to the Swedish consul telling them he's employing her as his au pair. He signs it 'Steve Tanner'.
