Plot
Dot finds out from Val that Elsie has gone out with Steve. The two walk through woodland and reminisce about happy times in the war. He tells her that he's not married when questioned on the subject. David promises to try and get another Cup Final ticket for Jerry. Hilda blames David for Irma being laid up. Stan discovers from Jack that his ticket is worth £10 and car park attendant Mike Ridehalgh might be interested in buying. Elsie takes Steve to the Rovers where he meets everyone, including Dennis. He approves of her choice. Val thinks Irma is enjoying all the attention. The women oggle Steve. Elsie keeps telling Steve she's a grandmother and that she can't see him again. The next day, David gets another ticket. Dot is astonished that Elsie doesn't want to see Steve again. David sells the ticket to Hilda so she and Stan can go together but unknown to her Stan sells his ticket to Mike Ridehalgh for £10. He plans to have a day out on the money without anyone knowing. Steve calls for Elsie but she isn't in. The residents are horrified when a train crashes through the viaduct onto the Street.

Notes
- From dialogue in the episode it is revealed that Elsie Tanner was not a natural red-head and only adopted the colour in the Second World War when she found out that Steve Tanner liked Rita Hayworth.
- The scenes of the just-fallen train and the accompanying rubble on the street were all achieved in the studio and not on location. The majority of these scenes were recorded in the studio session that produced Episodes 668 and Episode 669. During the same session the final moments of this episode were recorded to save having to recreate the train set-up for two weeks running and were probably directed by Michael Apted.
