Plot[]

Part One: Det Con Bill Sharp takes Jed aside and tells him he's wanted for questioning for receiving five dozen stolen blankets. Jed tries playing dumb but resigns himself to his fate when Sharp produces a warrant to search No.5. Sharp agrees to pretend he is a friend of Jed's from Liverpool so as not to upset Minnie. Hilda boycotts the party as Elsie is there. Len recognises Sharp as a detective and tries to keep the truth from Minnie. Sharp finds the blankets at No.5. He grants Jed's request to say goodbye to Minnie before he's taken away. Elsie hears her phone ringing from outside No.11 but doesn't answer it, worried that it's the same caller as before. She's suspicious when she sees Val exit No.9 moments after the phone rings out. Jed tells Minnie he has to leave Weatherfield right away to help his friend run an auction room in New Brighton. Minnie presents Jed with a new cap as a birthday present, holding back the tears until he goes. Jack follows her as she goes home to cry in private. Minnie admits that she knew Sharp was a policeman as she worked munitions with his mother. She knows he's going to prison. Jack persuades her to keep up the pretence as it's what Jed would want.

Part Two: Len tells everyone else who Sharp is. They pamper Minnie when she gets back and help her cut the cake, which reads 'Happy Birthday Ma'. At her request, they all sing "Ee Aye Addio", which Jed sang at the start of every day. Elsie can't stop thinking about the phone call. Dennis is sure the police found Jed through Stan giving his name in Liverpool. Hilda feels Dennis is calling Stan a copper's nark and tells him he's picked on the right family if he wants a set-to. She thinks Elsie is jealous because she's got a husband. Sheila answers the phone when it rings again but it turns out to be Linda Cheveski with the news that she's on her way home from Canada.
