Plot[]
Part One: Merle Baker tells Jerry and Sheila that she met David years ago when he was training in Hove. She says he promised they'd marry when she was twenty-one, and her birthday is coming up. They assume it's the wrong David but she got his address from his old football club in London. Annie takes charge of Merle when she returns from the election meeting. Elsie agrees to help Len canvass but refuses to do flats. Annie and Sheila tell Merle that David doesn't live in the area anymore. They keep her away from Irma when she comes into the Rovers. Jerry informs David that his fiancé is at the pub. David has never heard of a Merle Baker. Merle has nowhere to stay so Annie gives her a room at the Rovers. Len and Jed are stunned when Annie reveals her guest's identity to them.
Part Two: Annie sees Merle's heart being broken and advises her not to always take men at their word. Lucille tells Merle where David lives, not realising it's a secret. Annie has to break the news that David is married in order to stop her from marching over. As the news about Merle spreads, Hilda orders Stan to thump David for messing Irma about. Jerry distracts Irma at the shop while Annie demands that David come to the Rovers and settle his affairs. Stan jokingly goes for David for cheating on Irma. He and Ken think it's a great laugh. David tells Irma about Merle. She thinks that if he can't remember her, then he must have had loads of women. She comes with David to meet Merle.
