Plot[]

Part One: Dennis doesn't think Jim hitting Elsie is a big deal. He tells her he's fed up with her love life. The Walkers prepare for their holiday in Ireland but Lucille doesn't seem excited. Jim expects Elsie to back him over Len but she tells him they're as bad as each other. Jed and Dennis advertise a "celebrity" opening the Viaduct Bargain Boutique: Minnie, who is a star to Jed. Ray threatens to go out with someone else if Lucille goes to Ireland. Albert is back from Beattie Pearson's. He's upset that Ken and Val split in his absnce and blames Clara for pushing the Cleveleys job on him. Jed lets the customers preview the auction room and annoys Dennis by giving things away for free, reasoning that they'll tell all their friends. Len and Jim both try to buy Stan a pint; he buys one himself to avoid taking sides. Dennis admits to Elsie that he's been let go from the novelty firm. The telephone operator informs the Tanners that Linda will be calling from Canada later. Elsie's excited until she realises that it could be bad news.

Part Two: Ray wonders if Jed fancies Lucille. Annie, Minnie, Clara and Albert make excuses to be at No.11 in time for Linda calling. Elsie answers the phone and is relieved to find that Linda is just calling for a chat. She finds out that Ivan has been promoted at work and Paul has a girlfriend. Dennis is put out when she passes the phone to Annie next instead of him. He despairs when their guests hijack the call, with Minnie, Albert, and a gatecrashing Lucille and Ena getting to speak to Linda in turn before Linda puts Paul on the line and Elsie grabs the receiver. Dennis finally gets his turn only to find that Linda has hung up. Annie tries to cheer Elsie up by suggesting that Linda sensed her pain from across the Atlantic. Len warns Elsie that Jim is only after what he can get. He worries she's going to get hurt as she insists that Jim loves her.
