Plot[]
Part One: Len nurses another hangover as he and Jerry finish up at the shop. Emily visits her father in hospital. Jack catches Lucille working at Jed's stall and insists she tell Annie about the arrangement. Ken tells Elsie that if she wants to play at being a guardian of public morals, she can tell whoever she wants about his "affair". Albert asks Ken what he should do about Clara. Ken asks him what he's saving himself for. Returning from Harrogate with Joan Corrie, Emily finds a letter waiting for her from Mr St. John Hunter with the key to the shop in Majorca. She feels it's her chance for a new life.
Part Two: Elsie checks that Dennis and Jed aren't taking advantage of Lucille at the market and finds her in her element. Dennis and Jed move the piano into the front room for Val. Albert decides to go to Cleveleys, looking as it as a free holiday. Jackie wants to see more of Ken and suggests they spend the weekend together with him using a NUT conference as a cover. He says he'll think about it. Jed has a great day at the market thanks to Lucille. Jack lands Len and Jerry a contract at the brewery, with the possibility of a general maintenance contract for all of their pubs. Len thinks it's their big break but Jerry is more wary. Joan presses Emily to decide between Majorca and Harrogate as their father is coming out of hospital soon. Thinking about her future, Emily makes up her mind.

Notable dialogue[]
Miss Nugent: "‘Funny-haha’ or ‘funny peculiar’, we used to say at school. I’m both, I suppose. Typical! Your favourite spinster."
Joan Corrie: "Emily, stop it!"
Miss Nugent: "A bit too precise...too tidy. Getting a bit too particular, a bit querulous. Always available. Always there. But always in the background. And always afraid people don’t really want me. Because I’m not alluring, of course. Desperately afraid they’re only sorry for me."
