Plot[]
Part One: Annie has gone to Derby, leaving Lucille a list of instructions for looking after Jack. Ken tells Val he'll be late home as he has a union meeting. Albert enlists the help of his neighbour Ernie Mills to keep kids from playing on the allotments. Dave Smith wants to open a new betting shop in the area. Ernie suggests Coronation Street. Lionel puts a sign up in the shop asking customers not to ask for credit but they ask all the same. Val realises that Clara fancies Albert when she gives her advice on what to feed him. Jackie Marsh entertains Ken to a meal after he helps her with an article she's writing in the paper on David's football career. He persuades her to take him along to a pop art exhibition afterwards.
Part Two: Dave approaches Lionel about buying the shop. He's surprised that Florrie Lindley is no longer the owner. Lionel realises that he's ready to to move on. Minnie sees Lionel leading Dave through to the back room to discuss business and rushes to tell Ena. Val tells Albert she's packed in night school. Dave draws up a plan for the shop in the Rovers. Minnie drags Clara into the snug to find out what he and Lionel discussing but they just miss them. Lucille enjoys ordering Jack about. Albert runs away when Clara calls him into the snug. Ena finds the cigarette packet Dave drew his plans on and realises he intends to buy the shop. She swears to oppose it.
