Plot[]

Part One: Dennis looks for somewhere to store 144 boxes of Christmas crackers. Val refuses to let him use No.9 as they're a fire hazard. He tries the shop next but the stock room is full. The Walkers also turn him down as they're only insured to store products from the brewery. Clara looks for cleaning work for extra money. Hilda's furious when Annie agrees to keep her in mind. Val shares her enthusiasm for her sociology lessons with Ena. Ena tells her about her son who was stillborn during the Depression due to lack of nourishment to show that she can't learn everything from books. Sandra agrees to store the crackers in Gamma Garments' loft, not knowing that the loft is damp because of a faulty pipe.

Part Two: Ken and Val take Peter and Susan out to the park. Val feels she's wasting her time reading books and considers quitting her course. Ken tells her not to take any notice of Ena as she's doesn't have her best interests at heart. Ena hasn't been paid for cleaning up after the fashion show and threatens to go and see Mr. Papagopoulos about it. Emily remonstrates with Sandra when she admits that a torn apron Ena returned was ripped when she sold it to her. She threatens to report her to head office if her conduct doesn't improve. Sandra finds out that the loft is damp. With Val at school, Ken nips to the Rovers for a packet of cigarettes leaving the twins alone. He's gone a while as Albert, Stan and Len drag him over to settle an argument. A piece of coal falls from the fire at No.9 and starts to burn.

Notes[]

  • The twins playing Peter and Susan Barlow are uncredited. The kids appear only in the park scene, which was OB recorded on location at St. John's Gardens on Byrom Street in Manchester. The gardens are next to Granada Television's old Quay Street studios.
  • The end credits roll over the closing scene of the fire spreading at No.9.
  • TV Times synopsis: In which Dennis tries to go crackers
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast - 4,710,000 homes (chart placing unknown - the BBC scheduled Steptoe and Son directly opposite this episode of Coronation Street resulting in a lower than usual figure).

Notable dialogue[]

Ken Barlow (about Ena Sharples): "She goes round telling everybody how good she is at quoting out of the Bible but in fact she's less christian than a lot of heathens."
