Part One: Hilda notices a mark on Irma's cheek. Irma covers for Stan, saying she banged it on a shelf. Val craves intelligent conversation with Ken. Dennis believes he needs to think big to succeed. Irma longs to be married to David so she can leave home. Having enlisted Sandra, Emily tries to recruit Lucille and Irma as models in the fashion show. Lucille's keen but Irma isn't. Dennis contemplates having a phone installed at No.11 after Val suggests that the firm could pay. Irma refuses to talk to Stan or eat in the same room as him. Stan preempts Irma by telling Hilda that he hit her. Hilda is ashamed and demands he apologise to Irma but he refuses and demands respect from his daughter.

Part Two: Jerry suspects wood is going missing from the yard. Val agrees to act as dresser at the parade. Irma is furious as Hilda makes excuses for Stan's behaviour. She says she'll swing for him if he raises his hand to her again. David realises Stan hit Irma when he sees his girlfriend's face. Elsie lets Dennis order a phone on the condition that she doesn't have to pay for it. Sandra assures Emily that Dennis will supply all the models she needs. Len dives into the gents when Emily comes into the Rovers to collect everyone's bonfire money. David makes a spectacle of asking Stan if his favourite pasttime is knocking young girls about. Stan walks out of the pub when everyone's eyes fall on him. Jerry catches a youngster called Alan Platt stealing wood from the yard for a bonfire. Taking pity on the lad, he agrees to give him woodwork lessons.
