Plot[]
Part One: Minnie gets cards from Clara, Jed, Jerry and Charlie on her birthday. She makes excuses for Ena not sending one but is clearly disappointed. Elsie thanks Dennis for sticking up for her but asks him not to cause any more aggro. She worries about seeing Dennis Maxwell's wife at the inquest. Annie tells Hilda she put the police onto Elsie as she believed she had nothing to hide. Elsie catches Albert and Minnie gossiping about her and thinks she's being judged. Emily employs Sandra at Gamma Garments on £5 a week. She's excited as it's her first proper job. Charlie thinks about getting a car. Elsie hasn't been able to face going into work. Lionel tells Sandra that she can't have the job as she has to look after him and the shop. She threatens to leave him if he makes her stay.
Part Two: Minnie plans a birthday tea at No.5. Jerry's forced to attend when Len generously gives him time off for it. Lionel asks Stan how to get Sandra to stay. Stan advises him to call her bluff. Lionel does so but Sandra carries out her threat and declares she's moving out. Albert, Clara and Jerry attend Minnie's party. Jerry leaves when the pensioners just reminisce about the old days. Elsie decides to face up to the neighbours at the Rovers. The neighbours sing Happy Birthday to Minnie at the pub but silence falls when Elsie walks in. Elsie rejects their offers of a drink, thinking they've all been talking about her behind her back. Annie tells her to stop feeling sorry for herself, as they're all on her side and would help her if they could. Elsie thaws. Minnie gets a telegram from Ena saying happy birthday and that she's coming home tomorrow.
