Plot[]
Swindley has gone to the police station to make a full confession. He believes his career will be over if it goes to court, in more ways than one. Emily too is preoccupied and keeps slipping up at the shop. The residents speculate on who the magistrate will be if Swindley is prosecuted. Val stocks up before giving birth as Ken will have to cook for himself. Val has sold her salon equipment to Betty's in Hardman Street. Stan calls Jack a right ta-ta for believing that Swindley will be taken to court. Irma puts Stan on trial for slandering Jack, with the men agreeing to buy the other one a pint of bitter if they lose. Swindley and Emily receive a summons. Len arranges to take anyone who wants to go to court in his van. Ena books seats for her and Minnie, expecting a pantomime. Irma lays down the case against Stan. Stan isn't given a chance to defend himself as Ena, acting as magistrate, demands an immediate verdict as Irma has promised her and Minnie a bottle of stout each from the loser. Ken exchanges the custard Val bought for peaches at the shop so he doesn't have to cook. Irma offers to make his meals. Albert, Jerry and Charlie rule in favour of Stan after he bribes them with cigarettes he borrowed from Irma. The Barlows prepare for the birth of the twins. Ken is horrified when Val tells him that Irma's services are not required as she's already asked Ena. Swindley discovers the notorious "Strangeways Stan" is to be the magistrate.
