Plot[]
Ida has returned home from her mother's. David has his debut match on the first team for County in a benefit match. Ida gives him a meal of food recommended by his manager. David finds a box of chocolates that Ken has bought for Marian Lund and teases him over it, pushing his angry brother too far. Nevertheless he wishes him luck as he sets off. Christine tells Esther about Jean's problems with her parents and is advised to steer clear of interfering. Harry and Albert prepare to set off for the match. Concepta takes Lucille to the pictures while they're out. Esther is helping Christine put up some curtains when Jean calls with her things - she's run away from home. Frank is late setting off for the match and Albert offers him a lift with him and Harry in a friend's car. Esther disapproves of Jean having run away. The girl starts to feel regretful at her impetuous actions but tells them her parents make no effort to understand her. Christine tells her she can stay at No.13. Ena demands her money back from Florrie on a tin of salmon, saying it's anaemic. Ena sees Concepta taking Lucille out and makes insinuations about Harry and Concepta's intentions with Alice now gone, annoying Florrie. Ken sees Ida eating the chocolates. Realising her mistake, his mother asks who the girl is that they were intended for. Ken is about to answer when Frank comes in with the news that David has been taken to hospital.

- Although Westward Television was launched on Saturday 29th April, 1961, the station initially opted out of transmitting Coronation Street only joining the programme with Episode 48 on 29th May. The show was therefore not fully networked for the interim four-week period.
- Some children who play with Lucille Hewitt are uncredited, although they are voice-only characters, being heard off-set.
- Ken Barlow refers to his brother David as "Puskás", leading Ida to think he's insulting him. Ken educates her that he's referring to the famous footballer Ferenc Puskás.
