Plot[]
The street wakes up to a dense, foggy morning. Val plans the decorating but Ken refuses to do the job himself. Charlie advises her to get a professional in, saying he's done the job himself in the past. Val isn't pleased to hear that Ken has already asked Ted Grieves to give them an estimate. Lucille has received a letter from Concepta with news from Ireland. She admits to Jack that she harbours some regrets about not going with them. Elsie is annoyed with Len for leaving the house so quickly last evening. He thinks the two of them could work out but tells her he's expecting to see Harry Bailey today, admitting he's constantly changing his mind about what he's going to say to him. Jack goes to the bank and is summoned in to see Mr Powell, the manager, as his personal account is overdrawn. He promises to straighten it out. Having come up from Nottingham, Harry waits in the Rovers chatting to Charlie. Jack is in a bad mood behind the bar and Annie thinks it's his rheumatism. Len runs off in the opposite direction when Charlie tells him that Harry's in the Rovers. Annie upbraids Jack for being rude to Charlie. He admits that things are getting on top of him. Len asks Lucille how she feels about staying in Weatherfield and she admits it would have been stupid to change schools. Her words make his mind up and he asks her to fetch Harry round to his house. Ted's estimate for Ken is sky-high. Having found out that Harry's sister Gladys has moved in with him, an emotional Len tells him that Stanley can stay with him. Harry invites him to come down any time he wants. Val consults Len on the estimate. He's offended she didn't ask him first but thinks it's high and Ted is noted in the business for being a shark. While she is out, Ted pushes Ken for an answer and he agrees he can start work tomorrow. A worried Jack hides his money troubles from Annie.

Notes[]
- Copious amounts of dry ice are used to simulate the fog covering the street set in the early scenes.
- Ken and Valerie Barlow discuss his forthcoming pay rise, referring to newspaper stories she has read. These were on the subject of the "Remuneration of Teacher's" bill which was going through the House of Commons at the time.
- Jack Walker refers to Lucille Hewitt being on the "monkey run" in Heaton Park. This was an archaic term used to describe a place for young men and women to walk up and down a street or other venue in their best clothes, trying to attract someone from the opposite sex.
- From Episode 172 (6th August 1962) to Episode 459 (5th May 1965) the programme featured a standardised cast list for the regular characters. This means that in this episode the following were credited but did not appear: Albert Tatlock (Jack Howarth), Ena Sharples (Violet Carson), Minnie Caldwell (Margot Bryant), Florrie Lindley (Betty Alberge), Miss Nugent (Eileen Derbyshire), Dennis Tanner (Philip Lowrie), Irma Ogden (Sandra Gough), Stan Ogden (Bernard Youens) and Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander).
