Plot[]
Florrie is pleased with the increase in business caused by Elsie cooking all of Len's meals. The Walkers have organised a "free and easy" evening at the Rovers with their new music licence. Annie has booked old friend Howard Seymoure to be the pianist but Jack would prefer pub pianist Alf Chadwick. Annie is surprised when Irma brings in 10lbs of potatoes and some stewing steak for a hotpot for the evening, as per Jack's order. Annie was considering a high-class buffet but he insists she change her arrangements. An exhausted Len arrives from work for his evening meal at No.11 and Elsie makes Dennis fetch his slippers. Much to Dennis's amusement, Elsie takes £9 off Len from his £12 wages for his weekly food. Sgt Bowden takes over the district and is brought into the Rovers by Constable Barnes to meet the Walkers. They're given half a mild each on the house. Annie dislikes his observant manner. Howard arrives to test the piano and he and Annie reminisce but Jack sacks him when he refuses to play pub music. In return, Annie refuses to assist behind the bar. Back from Vera's, Ena finds Minnie is coming down with a cold. She passes Ena her notes about Len's comings and goings at No.11 and she finds he's been leaving the house every midnight. Irma is rushed off her feet as Jack sets out to find Alf. He locates him in the corner shop and takes him on for £2 a night. Elsie refuses to allow Len to go to the Rovers, wanting to talk instead. They realise they never did such a thing with their exes and go to the pub instead. The party is very successful though Ken is bored stiff with the community singing. Annie takes her place behind the bar. The hotpot is brought out but someone unplugs the clock while it is being served. Ken comes home, having had enough. The clock has been restarted and Irma calls "last orders" thinking it's 10.50pm. Sgt Bowden and Constable Barnes come in and stop the event, revealing it's actually 11.25pm. Bowden books Jack for serving after hours and takes the customers' names and addresses.
