Plot[]
Harry tells Ena that Nellie had been ill for twelve months but the seriousness of the situation only became apparent within the last few weeks. She goes to break the news to Len. The brewery install a new electric clock in the Rovers. Len is teasing Jack about business being down when Ena comes in and breaks the news to him. He's stunned. Annie gives him a drink on the house. Emily tells a surprised Elsie that Harry has returned. Irma mentions once sending daft letters to the lads who worked in Elliston's, piquing Val's attention. Len leaves his drink unfinished and makes his way to the vestry to meet Harry. The two men are friendly towards each other in their joint grief. The funeral is set for tomorrow in Nottingham but Len refuses to go, even though Harry doesn't mind. Harry asks Len if he wants Stanley back for good. A few days later, Annie tries to drop hints about it being their wedding anniversary, but Jack is preoccupied with the sales downturn. He determines to go with Stan that night on a "fact-finding" mission of the local pubs to find out what they are doing better. Emily plans to observe the Rovers' regulars for a sociological report she's writing for her night school. Elsie can't find Len anywhere. Ken joins the brewery tour. Annie is cold with Jack for not remembering their anniversary but he's oblivious as he sets out on his tour. Val does Lucille's hair. Dennis is pleased that his styling exam went well. Val drops hints to him that he should be suspicious of Irma. She's thrown when Lucille talks about having a crush on a lad she knows. The Rovers is quiet, leaving Emily with almost no one to observe. Dennis comes in and shows his letter to Irma but she denies being the author. Ena brings Len to the vestry to listen to his troubles after guessing that he'd locked himself in his house. The three men return drunk from their "investigation". Jack has to knock up a frosty Annie. He slurs to her that they need music in the pub and they're going to engage a pianist. She makes him realise at last that it's their anniversary and threatens that tomorrow things will be very different.
