Gail is adamant that they can't afford a mortgage. Martin works out that they'd only be paying £20 a month more than they do now if they use the £20,000 from Brian's insurance as a deposit. Gail tells him the money is for the children and can't be touched. Curly tells Angie that Bettabuy is looking for staff over Christmas. She refuses to apply as she doesn't want to be beholden to him. Bet gets Jack to move Alec's wardrobe out of her bedroom. Reg instructs Percy to get the kids' mothers to spend lots at the store. Percy is appalled by his attitude. Bet decides to have the bedrooms decorated as the wallpaper is full of tobacco stains. Curly shows Percy to his grotto. Percy resigns on the spot when he sees a sign outside reading "Santa Claus". Bet tells Betty that she's moving Alec into the spare room for a while as his punishment. Audrey advises Gail to use Brian's money to buy the house. Gail doesn't think it's fair on Brian as it's his legacy. Bet shocks Betty by employing Des Foster as decorator. Gail changes her mind and decides to use the money; it's for the living not the dead. Mike tells Alma he'll be waiting for her when she's done play-acting with Ken. Bet learns that Des Foster hasn't seen his wife for five years. She lets him know that Alec is on the other side of the world.
