Plot[]
Alma moves builders into the cafe flat. Rita and Mavis are cool towards each other. Stella Rigby tries to find out how Bet is coping. Bet tells her that Paul has been looking after her but doesn't tell her about their nights out. Stella invites her out for a girls' night. Mavis accuses Rita of being snide and small-minded over her move. At the office, Ray Griffiths tells Derek his blood pressure and heart rate are too high. Ray is worried about his ability to cope with stress. Alma tells Gail that she's having to sell her house because of her divorce and is moving into the flat over the cafe. She is going to work at the cafe and sack Phyllis. Derek is moved from sales to dispatch and is furious. He refuses to take the insult lying down.

- First appearance of Alma Sedgewick since 16th November 1988; from this episode onwards, Alma was a regular character.
- TV Times synopsis: Derek's concern for his own image is driving a wedge between Mavis and Rita. But Mavis refuses to believe she and Derek are setting their sights too high. And Bet tries to make out she's got nothing to hide, while Betty warns that she could be heading for trouble.
