Plot[]

Ron and Maggie are engaged. Maggie gets Ron to propose to her properly after he buys her an engagement ring but she won't wear it until she's told Alf. Hilda plans to use her money to do the house up in the hope that Trevor will visit and refuses to throw it away on a smart-arse lawyer Ray recommended. Betty confesses to Bet that Annie put her in charge while she's away visiting Joan. Betty thinks Maggie is going to accept Alf's proposal when Maggie tells her she wants to see him. Deirdre makes Hilda see that Stan will fare better with his own solicitor. She agrees to meet Mervyn Traynor to give him the once-over. Alf visits Maggie, expecting good news, and is stunned when she says she's turning him down to marry Ron. He feels conned and accuses her of leading him on. She tells him he's had plenty of opportunity to take things further. Hilda is deflated to find that Mervyn is young and inexperienced. He wins her over with his keenness. Maggie agrees to go to Zaire with Ron and they set the date for 10th July. Len encourages Alf to be a good loser but he walks out when Maggie and Ron enter the Rovers to announce their engagement. Betty agrees to be her matron of honour. Maggie admits to Betty that she's not telling Gordon that Ron was an alcoholic.
