Plot[]

Part One: Mason tells Dylan his flight to Germany is in six hours. Dylan encourages him to make his peace with Betsy. To accomplish this, Mason tries to buy flowers from Dev but is unable to afford the asking price. He is unnerved as he realises that Alya is going to represent Logan and Matty. Abi catches him in Seb’s memorial garden stealing some heather for Betsy. She sends him packing. He calls at Underworld with some poor daisies, but Betsy is dismissive when he says he had nothing to do with Becky’s death. Sally tries to get through to Betsy about how hard it was for him to call the police on his own family. Mason apologises to Liam for the bullying, but Gary and Maria make it clear that they're pleased they're glad to see the back of him. Returning to No.4 for his final meal, Mason realises he wants photo souvenirs of his mum. He asks for Dylan's help in going back to the family flat and, without telling Mason, Dylan brings his knife for protection, having previously lied about handing it in. Outside the precinct flat, they walk into Matty and Logan, released due to lack of evidence. They give chase and corner their brother in a ginnel. Dylan tries to help but then runs off. A cry rings out as, back in Dylan's flat, the empty knife bag lies beneath its hiding place of an open air vent.

Part Two: Mason settles down against the wall in the precinct playground, his face bloodied. He takes a call from Dylan and tells him that his brothers legged it. Betsy passes by, calmly asking him what happened. He asks if he can buy her a coffee to say goodbye. He sees Abi watching him with concern before they leave for Roy's Rolls. They walk out of the cafe as quickly as they came in as everyone in there seems to dislike him. Sally cleans up his facial wounds at No.4. He wonders why she and Tim like him. He takes a call from Liam asking to meet him. At the precinct, his former victim tells him he can never forget the abuse he loaded on him in the past. Tim arrives in his cab to take him to the airport, but once within it Mason sees that Abi is now seemingly the driver. She asks him if he's alright and he looks down at the large bleeding wound in his stomach.

Mason is collapsed against the wall in the precinct playground.

Several weeks before, Dylan hides the knife behind the air vent in his flat, remembering Mason's words of regret that it was his actions that made him so scared that he felt a need to carry it. Time passes with the knife untouched until Dylan fetches the weapon to accompany Mason home. As Logan and Matty set on Mason, Dylan tries to help by bringing out the knife, but a punch in the face from Logan makes him run off. The dropped knife is used to stab Mason.

A concerned Abi approaches Mason as the boy's brief life flashes before his eyes. She sees his bleeding wound and rushes to help, trying to stem the blood with her scarf and yelling for assistance.

Part Three: Abi rings an ambulance herself as Mason goes white in the face. Gary rushes up as Abi tries to reassure the crying lad. After responding to a hoax call, Asha and her paramedic colleagues are redirected to the precinct. Dylan looks out of his flat window and runs down when he sees the horrific scene below. Abi keeps Mason talking. At the police station, Lisa is worried when she can't contact Betsy and is furious to hear from Kit that the Radcliffe brothers have been released. She panics when he hears about a teenager stabbing at the precinct. Betsy walks up on the scene as the ambulance arrives. Gary listens on as Dylan has to admit he knows what knife was involved before fleeing. Gary rings Maria in the Rovers, who passes on the shocking news to Sean, Kevin, David and Shona. Mason is put in an ambulance as Lisa and Kit arrive. Lisa comforts her sobbing daughter. Betsy and Abi go in the ambulance. Lisa follows as Kit secures the crime scene. In his flat, Dylan collapses sobbing. As the ambulance continues its journey, a crying Betsy assures Mason she doesn't blame him for Becky's death.

Part Four: Mason is rushed into A&E. The doctors try their best, but Asha watches as he goes into cardiac arrest and dies. She breaks the news to Betsy and Abi. Lisa arrives, but thinking of Becky's death, she has to compose herself before hugging her hysterical daughter. Sean cries with relief when he finds Dylan safe at home. The lad allows his father to think the Radcliffe brothers brought their knife with them, nevertheless Dylan blames himself for running away. Sean insists on going to make a statement to the police. Dylan collapses in tears as Sean receives a call from Abi to say that Mason is dead. Remembering Seb, Abi feels the need to call Stu and Yasmeen. Reading in the press that Logan and Matty are still at large, David panics as Lily has just gone to the shops and rushes to fetch her back. Gary, Maria and Liam are stunned when Yasmeen breaks the news. Tim comforts Sally as he wonders aloud at the fear and devastation such crimes cause.

Notable dialogue[]

Tim Metcalfe: "It's not just two lives. That's the thing. It's the family. All the people that cared about 'em. It's never just the person that held the knife. Or the 16-year-old who's dead, in the ground. It's the people living in fear... thinking they're next. It's the nothingness. The pain they leave behind. 'Cos they're just kids, Sal. They're just kids. And they're dying."
