Plot[]
Part One: Paul dreams he's dancing with Billy. It turns into a nightmare when he finds himself alone staring into the abyss. In the waking world, he's horrified to discover his speech has diminished overnight. Billy takes him on their day out, starting at St. Mary's Church. As they remember their wedding day, Billy takes out his Bible to do a reading, but Paul cuts him off, the sight of the Holy book reminding him of his husband's promise to help him end his life. At the Rovers, the couple are greeted by Todd, Summer, Daniel, Dee-Dee, Kirk and David. As they swap stories on how they'd spend their last day of freedom, Paul's gutted to realise that his friends can barely understand him. He puts on a brave face, but when Billy mishears him saying 'I love you', a line is crossed and he whispers to Todd that it might be time. Todd puzzles over his words as an oblivious Billy wheels his husband over to No.5.
Part Two: Paul and Billy visit Gemma and the children on Chesney's birthday. Kit also drops by for the occasion. Bernie isn't there as she's getting ready to go to Blackpool with Dev. Joseph is scared of his uncle and keeps his distance. Paul tells Gemma that she's a fab sister and mother. As they return to the flat, Paul gives Summer money for a hotel for her night out with Asha. Todd realises he's getting her out of the flat so he can and Billy can proceed with their plan. He's devastated but doesn't try to talk Paul out of it. Paul insists on seeing Bernie today. The woman in question turns up with a load of videos she's purchased for Paul and Billy to have 1980s movie nights, complete with a VCR. She promises to visit him daily from now on. Left alone with Paul, Billy freezes when his husband plays Oh Happy Day on his tablet.
Part Three: Billy begs Paul to change his mind, assuring him that they'll soon find another place to live in where he can come and go. He promises more good days like this one if he'll give it a chance. Paul reminds him that he swore he would help when the time was right. Billy pleads with Paul to let him love him for a little bit longer. As he storms off, Paul realises he shouldn't have sprung it on him and apologises. Billy returns and begins mixing up the deadly concoction, still hopeful that Paul will choose not to go through with it. Paul asks him to say it happened after midnight as he doesn't want to ruin Chesney's birthday - Billy refuses to lie and insists on waiting until midnight to proceed. At 11pm, Paul shows his regret at never going abroad with Billy and asks him to describe the holiday they never had. Billy paints a picture of a tranquil beach in Ibiza, and the couple walking hand-in-hand. They express their gratitude for the time they had together.
Part Four: With minutes to go, Billy completes his Bible reading from earlier in the day. He tells Paul how lucky he is to have had him in his life. As midnight strikes, Billy gives Paul a chance to back out, adding that if he's still set on his course of action, he will do the deed. They're interrupted by the buzzer - Chesney needs to leave the kids as Carys has fallen down the stairs and Gemma's gone with her to the hospital. Billy's relieved, as is Paul; they readily agree to have the kids overnight. Billy throws the syringe away before they come upstairs. The children are put up in Summer's room but get up one-by-one, unable to sleep. Paul lets them play in the living room before bed. Joseph sits with Paul and says he knows he's still his uncle inside and he's going to learn to understand him. Paul's grateful. Billy's elated that Paul has been spared. As Paul drifts off, he dreams of dancing with Billy again but this time they walk into the light together. In the morning, Chesney collects the quads and reveals that Carys will be fine. Paul tells Billy that, while he hasn't changed his mind, he doesn't want to die today. Billy promises he'll be with him every step of the way.

Notes[]
- This was a special episode devoted entirely to Paul Foreman's motor neurone disease storyline. Paul and Billy Mayhew appear in every scene, with a 14" stretch in 11322 being a two-hander between the pair.
- The opening of the episode is a dream sequence where Paul is shown dancing with Billy to Why? by Bronski Beat, free of his MND. The dream resumes when Paul falls asleep towards the end of the episode, where he and Billy walk off into the light together, this time to the music of Limno by Ferry Corsten and Richard Walters.
- Paul's inner monologue is heard at various points throughout the episode. This allows viewers to be privy to Paul's thoughts as his speech deteriorates.
- The Bible verse Billy paraphrases comes from 1 Corinthians 13:4–7: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
- The episode was dedicated to the memory of Rob Burrow CBE, the former rugby player who was diagnosed with MND in 2019 and passed away on 2nd June 2024 aged 41 [1].
- Flashbacks are shown at key moments, firstly when Paul and Billy are in St. Mary's Church, and later when Paul and Billy are waiting for the clock to strike twelve. These include their wedding (Episode 11073/4 (2nd October 2023)), Billy swearing on the Bible to help Paul end his life (Episode 11158/9 (9th January 2024)), a date at the Rovers (Episode 9735 (3rd April 2019)), exchanging glances in the street (Episode 9917 (6th November 2019)), skinny dipping (Episode 11043/4 (28th August 2023)), Paul recounting Kel Hinchley's abuse (Episode 9885/6 (27th September 2019)), being intimate in the flower shop flat (Episode 11111/2 (15th November 2023)), the motorbike sidecar ride (Episode 11188/9 (13th February 2024)), Paul asking Billy to marry him (Episode 11013/4 (24th July 2023)), Paul kissing Billy (Episode 9929 (18th November 2019) and Episode 9661 (7th January 2019)), Paul struggling to lift a glass (Episode 10920/1 (5th April 2023)), stumbling outside the flat (Episode 10970 (2nd June 2023)), at Weatherfield Magistrates Court for car theft (Episode 10964/5 (26th May 2023)), falling in the flat (Episode 11156/7 (3rd January 2024)), and on the sofa with Billy (Episode 9890 (2nd October 2019)). Archive clips constitute the only appearances by Degsy, the vicar who married Paul and Billy, in 11321 and Bernie Winter in 11322, although Bernie does appear in person in 11321.
- As Paul features throughout, editing techniques such as fades-to-black and changes in camera focus are used to signify that time has elapsed between scenes, especially those set in the same location. Similar devices were employed in Episode 9906/7 (25th October 2019), where Sinead Osbourne died from cancer.
- The scenes at St. Mary's Church were recorded on location at its namesake in Church Lane, Prestwich.
- The episode was made available to stream on the ITVX video-on-demand service at 7.00am on Friday 26th July. ITV released the episode early as it was due to clash with the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics on BBC ONE.
- TV Times synopsis: Paul wakes to discover that his speech has deteriorated, but he is determined to enjoy his last day of freedom before being confined to the flat, so Billy takes him on a tour in which they endure a rollercoaster of emotions.
- Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast: 4,026,000 viewers (8th place).
