Plot[]
Part One: Bernie tries to sneak out of the house early, making an excuse of going to Freshco when Gemma catches her. Steve reads an article that Tim tries to hide from him saying that County plans to honour Tommy by commissioning a bust of him. Toyah finds a forum for ex-members of the Altovalent Institute. Gemma finds out from Paul that Freshco was closed due to a power failure. She rings Bernie who says she's at the store's tills and can't talk. Toyah tries to show Leanne a post she’s just seen, suggesting that the Institute is not to be trusted, only to discover it’s just been taken down for legal reasons. Leanne is dismissive. A worried Gemma asks Dev to do some digging with Bernie. Michael's found out the legal costs involved if Glenda sues George and advises her not to. Dev confronts Bernie, who under pressure crumbles, admitting she had another son, Zodiac (Zac for short), who was taken into care, and she's trying to find him.
Part Two: A crying Bernie tells Dev that she had a one-night stand after a split from Denny. Unable to cope with the resulting baby, she had him adopted by a couple who changed his name to Christopher Green. She's been sneaking out, visiting each man named that in Manchester. Leanne calls Rowan who makes out that his bitter ex wrote the post and there’s no truth in her words. Just promoted to head of the North-West division, he offers her a tour of the Institute and Leanne’s flattered. Bethany overhears when Dee-Dee tells Carla and Nina that the CPS have some news regarding Lauren’s phone messages which have come to light. Bernie calls at a well-to-do house and pretends to have come for a cleaning job when the man within, Kit Green, mistakes her for an applicant for the vacant post. George apologises to Glenda and hands her a cheque for £22,000 by way of a compromise, hoping it’s an end to their feud. Bernie is given the cleaning job. Steve lunches with Demi and proceeds to bore her as he slags off Tommy. When she enquires why he hates him so much, Steve spills the beans about Tracy’s affair. Bethany inveigles her way into the solicitors, saying she's there to see Dee-Dee. Adam leaves her alone in the office. Kit finds Bernie searching his house and tells her the agency don't know who she is. She tells him the truth as to why she's there.
Part Three: Kit doesn't believe Bernie and tells her he's not adopted. Hearing about Paul, he accuses her of looking for a replacement son. She leaves. Dee-Dee almost catches Bethany searching for Roy's files. She covers by asking if she has a case against the police for not informing her about Nathan's release. Demi is even more bored as Steve goes on about Tracy. Nick agrees to accompany Leanne to the Institute. Dee-Dee realises that Bethany went through her files. She covers her embarrassment by telling Dee-Dee that she's missed realising that a text message that the police think came from Roy was mis-spelled - something that Roy would never do. Carla backs her up. George still feels guilty for upsetting Glenda. Having had enough, Demi dumps Steve. Gemma's been searching through Bernie's keepsake tin and asks Bernie who Christopher Green is.
Part Four: Bernie goes along with Gemma's mistake that he's an old boyfriend. A buoyed-up Leanne returns from the Institute. Nick tells Toyah they all seemed like normal people and his own fears have diminished. Gemma tells Paul she's going to find Christopher Green to cheer their mum up. Glenda admits to Michael that she thinks George's offer is shabby and as Estelle has taken Little Big Shotz off the market, she's going to use the money to sue her brother. Rowan invites Leanne to their annual two-week retreat and warns Toyah off spoiling her sister's happiness. Having followed Bethany's suggestion, Dee-Dee tells Swain that Roy didn't write the messages and she is going to get an expert opinion. Bernie admits to Dev that she had Zac after she had the twins out of pure selfishness and among his belongings when he left was a small jade elephant. In his house, Kit thoughtfully examines an identical object.
