Plot
Part One: Bernie lets off steam to Dev about Denny, secretly worried that her ex might blab about her past. Billy reminds Paul that Denny used to knock him about when he was a kid and he’s not to be trusted. As Adam and Alya work together on the joint case, they share a joke but then quickly get down to work. Denny calls at the flat and Paul invites him to watch a film. Billy reluctantly leaves them to it with instructions not to leave Paul on his own. A downbeat Steve tells Amy he’s had enough of dating apps, but he quickly changes his tune when he sees a message from Demi Mansfield. Denny nips out for ice cream to eat with the film leaving Paul alone. Liam searches ways to deal with anxiety. Denny bumps into Gemma and begs her to let him meet the quads, lying that Paul is with Billy. She reluctantly tells him they're in the cafe with Bernie. Alone in the flat, Paul suddenly struggles to breathe. Bernie can't stand being near Denny and leaves. Paul tries to call for an ambulance but when the operator answers, he drops the phone.
Part Two: Tired of her dad's presence, Gemma tells Denny he should return to Paul. As he waits for Joseph outside their Jeet Kune Do class, Liam looks up diazepam. Tim and Steve are uncomfortable when they bump into each other in the cafe. Alya assures Adam that Rich means nothing to her. As Steve nervously prepares for his date, he tells Amy that he’s convinced Demi’s the one. Sally questions Tim if he has seen Steve outside of work. Adam finally admits his feelings to Alya and the pair kiss, just as Rich calls at the office to find them in a clinch. Dev returns from a golf game to find Bernie rifling through a tin of old letters and photos. When he wonders what she’s looking for, she’s uneasy. Denny returns and is shocked to find Paul barely conscious.
Part Three: Billy returns and finds Paul being put into Asha's ambulance. Once it leaves for the General, Denny's mask of concern slips. Rich upbraids Alya in front of Adam for being unprofessional. Bernie tells Dev that the tin has her "keep forever" things to mean something to her in it. She asks him how he copes with not seeing his other children. He admits he often feels guilty. Steve meets up with Demi in the Rovers and they hit it off immediately when he finds that she's a pint-drinking football fan who used to work at County and dislikes Tommy Orpington. Tim is unhappy with Sally for stopping him seeing Steve and she admits she's scared that their own marriage could follow suit. They tell each other that they're both pulling above their weight. Liam rings his mum, feigning enthusiasm about the class in front of Joseph. Paul's ambulance has to wait outside the hospital for a bed, making Billy anxious. He apologises for leaving him alone with Denny.
Part Four: Denny refuses to go with Gemma to the hospital and she realises that he left Paul on his own. She insists he joins her in visiting her brother. A reluctant Rich meets Adam who tries to talk up Alya's skills. A bed is found for Paul. Sally and Tim enter the pub to find Steve and Demi getting on like a house on fire. Paul is diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia. Denny argues with Bernie over their son's bed and the family make it clear he's not welcome. Liam puts on a show of being happy in front of Maria but behind her back he uses his inhaler as he suffers more anxiety. An upbeat Steve returns from his date, enthusing to Amy about Demi. Roy calls Dee-Dee from prison about Lauren’s necklace, which he had drawn a sketch of, and how if they can locate where it’s from they might be able to trace her mystery boyfriend. Bernie hopes that Denny is out of their lives and can't hurt Paul again, unaware that he is on the phone as they speak, making plans to sell his son's valuable electric wheelchair.
