Plot[]
Part One: Ed tells Dee-Dee that his mate, Marcus, has offered him a bed at his house so he will move out of the flat today and is hoping that Gary will put in an offer for the yard. Carla is suspicious when Simon's story about being sick isn't consistent. Maria takes Liam's phone off him and agrees that he can go to work with Gary today. Maria suspects that her son is covering for someone. Michael once again refuses Ed's apologies. Tracy shows Tommy Orpington, in his new vocation as a decorator, into No.1. Steve is stunned to find his hero in the back room. He's gutted that he'll be in Paris when Tommy is doing the work. Bernie calls at the flower shop flat to find Billy on the sofa after putting his back out helping Paul out of the bath due to Moses running late. As Leanne watches on in the bistro, Gary tells a devastated Ed that he won't be buying the yard as he needs to concentrate on his family.
Part Two: Simon admits to Bobby that he went on an all-day bender. As Dee-Dee helps Ed pack up his things, Marcus calls Ed and tells him the spare room is no longer available, but Ed covers. On Rosamund Street, a stressed Moses explains to Todd how overworked he is. As he is given a comforting hug, an angry Bernie watches on. When Simon returns late to work from lunch, Beth points out to Carla that nobody else would get away with it. Ronnie tells Michael that Marcus has informed him Ed is now homeless as Leanne approaches and reveals that Ed seemed quite desperate after a fruitless meeting with Gary. Tracy reminds Steve that they've hired Tommy to do the decorating and he's not to distract him. He agrees to go to Paris. Kirk sprains his ankle. Carla orders Simon to take the Underworld van and make the delivery but he refuses. Carla sacks him. Warmed by an electric heater, a crying Ed beds down in the yard office, sobbing. Moses receives a call from his boss telling him he's now been suspended. Michael's horrified to see smoke billowing from the yard. As he races up the stairs, there's no sign of Ed. As he turns to leave, he realises the fire has spread and the stairs are engulfed in flames.
Part Three: Damon alerts Ed to the fire and they hear someone within. Ed ascends via the external balcony stairs and rescues his son. Simon only gives an angry Leanne half the story when he tells her that he's been sacked. A fire engine arrives as Michael struggles for breath. Liam offers to fix a broken puppet in the furniture shop. Bernie hears about the suspension and Paul realises from her reaction that she knows something about it. Leanne storms round to the factory and confronts Carla and hears about the sickie and the drinking. Bernie apologises to Paul for getting Moses into trouble and rings his bosses back. As Michael is taken to hospital, he asks Ed to accompany him. Attending the incident, Craig is told by a fire officer that the premises reeked of white spirits.
Part Four: Tim, Kevin and Kirk are staggered to hear that Tommy is decorating No.1. Leanne tells Simon he's been drinking too much recently. Michael is on oxygen as he recovers from smoke inhalation. Craig visits to enquire about the fire and Ed tells him he left the heater on while he went to the chip shop. Simon refuses Bobby's idea of a night out. Maria hears that Liam had a good day. Tracy gets tired of the menfolk going on about Tommy. They hear that their hero is getting a divorce. As the Baileys are reunited, Michael tells Ed he can move back into No.3. Bernie can't get Moses's suspension lifted. Unable to contact Peter for a chat, a saddened Simon breaks open a can. Craig tells DS Swain that the fire could have been an insurance job. Back in his house, Ed thinks there's a way forward for him now.
