Plot[]
Part One: Joseph tells Gemma that he doesn't feel well. Gemma's sceptical after what happened last time and sends him to school. Aggie sends word that she'll be at Auntie Marcelle's over Christmas. Ed and Ronnie's father Ernest "Sarge" Bailey arrives at No.3. Liam tries to cry off from school but Maria refuses to let him without a good reason. Simon feels his business is over before it's started. Ronnie suggests a family meal at the bistro. Ed panics when he insists that they'll pick up the tab. Gemma notices a load of missed calls on her phone from Chesney and the school. Shona catches Lauren on her phone one time too many at the cafe and confiscates the handset. Ed gets a payday loan from Bargainanza and immediately opens the racing pages.
Part Two: Gemma finds out that Joseph was sent home from school with a possible virus. She's annoyed when Chesney tells her she should have kept him off, feeling she can't win. Debbie and Joel join the Baileys at the bistro. Ed surreptitiously watches the racing on his phone during the meal. Sarge makes digs at Ed's business brain and Dee-Dee explains to Joel that he thinks they lost their house because of a bad business decision, not Ed's gambling. Shona lets Lauren finish early to start a shift at the call centre. Mrs Crawshaw hears Liam quizzing Dylan about the vapes and orders Dylan to see her later. Ed loses his bet. Leanne tackles Simon about his late hour drinking and video game sessions. He says he doesn't have enough money to go out. Chesney assures Gemma that he has faith in her. Gemma storms out when he admits he made excuses for her with the school nurse. Ed confesses to Tony that he can't pay him the full amount. Tony realises he put his wages on a horse when the betting slip falls out of Ed's pocket. Ed pleads with him not to tell his family that he's gambling again just as Ronnie enters.
Part Three: Tony makes out that he's at the yard looking for more work, but once Ronnie leaves he demands Ed pays him what he's owed soon or else. Mrs Crawshaw gives Dylan detention. Dylan blames Liam. Shona's unimpressed to find Lauren out shopping rather than at the call centre. Peter encourages Simon not to give up at the first hurdle and waste years of his life, like he did. Sarge annoys the Baileys by going on about their old house and wishing that they were still living there. Dee-Dee, sick of him putting Ed down, reveals that it was her dad's gambling that made them lose the house but he's now beaten his addiction and they couldn't be more proud of him. Bernie suggests meditation to Gemma. Mason tears Liam's bag and throws it on top of a van when the boy refuses to help sell the vapes. He records a video on his phone of Liam climbing on the van to fetch the bag. Sarge thinks Ed is weak for succumbing to his demons. His family defend him but Ed can't cope with his father's judgementalism and walks out.
Part Four: Gemma meditates to try and calm herself. Michael and Dee-Dee tell Sarge he isn't welcome if he gives Ed a hard time. Liam doesn't tell Maria about Mason bullying him. Lauren arrives home, dressed to the nines. She changes back into her tracksuit for a lesson with Daniel but he wonders about the life she's leading when he smells drink on her and sees her high heels on the floor. Peter suggests to Carla that she gives Simon more responsibility at the factory. She refuses to annoy her staff by promoting a family member. Ed gives Tony £40 and promises the rest in a week's time. Afterwards, he goes to a gamblers anonymous meeting and tells the group that he's never been so frightened in his life.
