Plot[]
Part One: Gary returns from an early morning trip to recce the new County training ground building site and reports to Maria that it is already surrounded by security fences. Faye feels ill after a poor night's sleep and in no mood to listen to Craig when he wants to talk honestly with her about how he feels about giving up his police work. Sarah brings Adam home. He's determined to take responsibility and apologise to all the women he's hurt with his callous behaviour in the past. Gary prepares to return to the site, planning afterwards to dump the body at sea. Maria reluctantly goes with Kirk to the election count at the Town Hall. Over a coffee at the cafe, Faye confesses to Elaine that she thinks she might be pregnant. She's worried that the news will split up her and Craig for good. Tim has an appointment with his cardiologist tomorrow and desperately hopes his sex ban will be lifted. Kelly is angry to find Ron reporting to Laura in the flat, reiterating that she wants nothing to do with Rick's money. Ron tells Laura that no person can ever voluntarily disappear the way that Rick has, and he must therefore be dead. His ex-colleagues in the police feel the same way, and their prime suspect for murder is Gary.
Part Two: With Sarah's full knowledge, Adam meets up with former fling Naomi. Gary is prevented from entering the building site by a security guard. Faye's test is positive, but she asks Elaine to keep the news to herself while she gets her own head round the matter. Gary returns to the news that Maria has been elected to the council. She panics when he says that the only option that he can think of is to hand himself in and hope for a reduced sentence. Laura texts him, urgently wanting to talk. Adam apologises to Naomi for the way he treated her. She admits he hurt her and smilingly offers to help him understand women better after he's bought her lunch. Tim is overjoyed when Sally returns from Newcastle. He's desperate to get her into bed, but Sally points out his six-week ban isn't up yet and he'll have to wait. Laura tells Gary about Ron's conclusions. Emma lets slip to Faye that Craig resents her for losing his job. Laura grows hysterical, demanding to know what happened to Rick and what Gary knows about his disappearance. The pressure getting to him, Gary admits he murdered Rick.
Part Three: A staggered Laura feels Gary is no better than Rick was, and she can no longer count on him to look after Kelly's interests after she has gone. She accuses him of only being interested in easing his own conscience when he was helping them and threatens to prevent him doing any more harm to her daughter. Emma tries but fails to assure Faye that Craig doesn't want to lose her. Gary tells Laura that Rick was threatening Sarah and her family when he murdered him and he only paid money to Kelly to minimise the harm he knew he'd caused her. After an expensive meal at the bistro, Naomi leaves as she breaks the news to Adam that she truthfully never gave him a second thought but she has enjoyed getting a free lunch out of him. Laura begins to understand Gary's position but has no option to go to the police to have her ex-husband declared dead in order that Kelly can inherit. Accepting his fate, Gary tells her where the body is. Laura frets how Kelly will take the revelation. Almost in tears, Gary asks for time to warn Maria and Laura agrees. Tim persuades Sally they should flout the rules and have sex a day early, but they're thwarted when Elaine walks in. Craig and Faye talk. He's able to explain how he's feeling without them falling out and in return she breaks the news of her pregnancy. Laura overhears Kelly telling Simon how much she's enjoying bonding with her mother, and that all her future hopes of a happy life are due to Gary and Maria.
Part Four: Craig is delighted at the news, telling Faye how much he loves her and wants to be with her. He's thinking of withdrawing his resignation from the police. Sally is put off sex when Elaine tells her the percentage of men who have died suddenly whilst performing. Gary tells an upset Maria of developments and, that with the site now being built over, they've reached the end of the line. Craig and Faye tell Emma they've sorted out their differences as she heads off for another secret rendezvous with Jon. Kelly is on a high after positive feedback from the awards' panel, but frets when Gary and Maria tell her they need to talk to her back at the flat. Adam tells Sarah what happened with Naomi. Amused, she tells him to just move on from his mistakes. Turning the corner into Victoria Street, Gary, Maria and Kelly see Laura being led away for questioning by the police as she's confessed to Rick's murder. Gary is stunned.
