Part One: James tells the press conference that he's gay. He makes an impassioned speech about it being part of his private life and that it's nothing to do with football. The journalists are impressed with the answer. Sam rushes back into the house and has to interrupt Nick and David's row to tell them about Gail's collapse. When Ryan reveals that he's a DJ, Daisy urges him to reboot his career and follow his heart. Nick rings an ambulance as a breathless Gail accuses him, Sarah and David of causing her to have a heart attack with their endless bickering. She cries, wanting Audrey to be with her. Jenny is saddened that Johnny will be leaving when he moves into his new place in Mawdsley Street. The journalists continue to ask questions about James's sexuality and whether he has a boyfriend. James says he doesn't. Sammy tells James he admires him as his brother is gay but warns him that he's in for a bumpy ride. Tyrone and Fiz return from the funeral where there were only six people in attendance. She invites him in for a drink. Audrey sits with Gail as she waits for the results of her tests. She remembers happier times in Thailand without any family conflicts. Audrey makes her realise that she does too much for her dependent children. Gail wants more time to be herself and enjoy life.

Part Two: Tyrone bottles out of telling Fiz about Alina's pregnancy and, making excuses, heads home. Gail is diagnosed with a minor heart attack and kept in overnight. Audrey returns, determined to lay down the law to her grandchildren. Johnny and Jenny enjoy a drink and a laugh together, committing to always being good friends. The Baileys return home, happy with their lives. Alya finds Ryan thoroughly enjoying using his DJ gear. An excited Tim and Steve call at No.3, hoping for a selfie with James. He takes the two star-struck men to the Rovers to celebrate. Evelyn is relieved to hear from Fiz that she and Tyrone have seemingly settled their differences. Audrey reads the riot act to Nick and David, telling them that Gail is going to leave Weatherfield altogether. James is made up when Danny appears on the street with champagne, having seen the news at the airport. They kiss, to everyone's cheers.

Notes[]

  • The episode was made available to stream on the ITV Hub on Monday 28th June, ahead of its ITV transmission following a decision taken by ITV to release all episodes of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale at the start of each week for the duration of the Euro 2020 football tournament, a time when the soaps were frequently displaced from their usual timelots, so that viewers could watch at their convenience.
  • Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this episode was made with social distancing rules being observed by both cast and production crew, even when they were playing family members or people who shared residences. The kiss between James Bailey and Danny Tomlinson was filmed after Nathan Graham and Dylan Brady became part of a tested cohort so they could safely work closer than two metres and actually kiss. Some other scenes included a split-screen shot with two shots merged in post-production so that actors could be pictured being closer together than they actually were on set. One such shot was with Gail Rodwell and Audrey Roberts (pictured above).
  • TV Times synopsis: Family feuding causes heartache for Gail; and Tyrone avoids telling Fiz of Alina's pregnancy.
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast: 5,047,000 viewers (13th place).
