Plot[]

Part One: It's the day of Yasmeen's trial and she suffers a nightmare in which she has been found guilty, incarcerated, and every officer in the prison is Geoff. Adam riles Gary about cashing in on people's problems in the pandemic. Ed worries that Aggie is working far too hard at the hospital and decides to plan something nice for her. Gary is perturbed to discover that Brian has read in the Gazette about a discovery of Roman coins in Beacon Woods and is planning to take his metal detector down there to see what he can find. Desperate to reduce the chances of Rick's body being found, Gary suggests that everyone will be searching that site and he ought to try somewhere different. Tim dreads being in the witness box in court, being questioned by Paula. Sally doesn't talk to Geoff when he calls to collect Tim. Geoff worries that a surprise witness will appear. Bernie tells Brian she saw Gary driving off with a shovel in his van and surmises he's trying to beat him to any treasure. They join forces to search themselves. Imran collects Yasmeen to take her to court. She tells him about Elaine Jones but suffers a sudden collapse.

Part Two: Back on the street, Elaine herself watches from a distance as Geoff and Tim set off for court. She upsets Ryan's bucket of water as he cleans the Rovers' windows and runs off. Alya runs up in a panic, saying her gran is in hospital. Sarah catches Adam and Laura flirting in the solicitors office. A furious Laura tells Sarah that her husband is a cheat and leaves. Sarah demands an answer from him and hears who she is and that Adam is using her. She's angry when Adam puts forward his theory that Gary is a murderer. Geoff and Tim return with the trial adjourned due to Yasmeen's collapse. Geoff rails that his wife's putting it on, much to Sally's disgust. Yasmeen is diagnosed with a heart attack. Brian and Bernie return from the woods, having encountered an angry Gary there. He follows them back and smashes up Brian's detector in a furious fit as an astonished Sarah looks on. He apologises for losing his cool. Entering No.5, a smug Bernie looks with pleasure at an expensive watch she has found in the woods and pocketed. On the back, it is inscribed "To Rick From Laura XXX".

Notes[]

  • This episode, transmitted at 7.30pm, was the only episode shown on this date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to a temporary cessation of the programme's shooting which ran from 23rd March to 7th June, after which scenes were then recorded for the partially-completed Episodes 10084 to Episode 10091. This was the first episode recorded totally after the lockdown with shooting commencing on Monday 15th June and, as such, the programme caught up with "real-world" events after being set in the "near-past" since the end of March. It therefore became possible to feature situations and scenarios compatible with the present day, such as signs, sanitisers, masks and gloves being on display in The Kabin, Roy's Rolls, Weatherfield General and Norcross Prison. In addition, several references were made in dialogue to the pandemic and its effects while, within the production, the distancing rules were rigorously observed by both cast and production crew when making the episode, even when they were playing family members or people who shared residences. This was assisted by a studio "cohort" system whereby enclosed team of directors, cameramen, sound, costume and make-up staff, etc, would work in one studio at a time with only the actors coming in from "outside" the cohort to record their scenes, with the same set-up being replicated in the other studios. This ensured that any mixing was kept to a minimum. It also meant that a single director was not responsible for all the scenes in a given episode, but it was decided not to amend the credits to show multiple hands at the helm. The cohort system lasted until Episode 10571 (23rd February 2022), after which single directors helmed all scenes within their own blocks.
  • The scene of Yasmeen Metcalfe's nightmare was achieved with a variety of split-screen techniques to show multiple versions of Geoff Metcalfe, unusual camera lenses and incidental music (specifically Nightmares Before Bedtime by Tom Boddy) to accentuate its dream-like nature.
  • TV Times synopsis: Yasmeen collapses on the first day of her trial; Gary is concerned by Brian's interest in Beacon Woods; and Ed worries that Aggie is working far too hard at the hospital.
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast: 6,593,405 viewers (3rd place).
