Elaine Jones (previously Philippa Metcalfe) was the first wife of Geoff Metcalfe and biological mother of Tim.
Philippa had Tim in 1972 but left Geoff a year later when his controlling and abusive behaviour left her frightened for her life. Prevented from taking Tim with her, Philippa divorced Geoff and changed her name to Elaine Jones. For nearly fifty years, she stayed away from the family, and eventually settled in Bolton. She came out of hiding when she read in the papers that Geoff had been assaulted by his current wife Yasmeen. Guessing that Yasmeen had been subjected to the same abuse as her, Elaine contacted her and gave evidence against their abuser in court, helping to exonerate her.
Following Geoff's death, Elaine has tried to make up for lost time with Tim, with spells living at 4 Coronation Street. She has also kept up her friendship with Yasmeen and briefly held shares in her restaurant, Speed Daal. In 2023, she became engaged to Stephen Reid and bought 6 Redbank Apartments for them, but broke it off when she discovered that he'd taken out a life insurance policy on her and forged her signature. After the split, she briefly went back to living with the Metcalfes at No.4 before opting to stay with a friend in Scarborough.
Biography
1951-2020: An abusive marriage
In 1971, 20-year-old Philippa married 21-year-old Geoff Metcalfe when she fell pregnant as he wanted to "do right by her", and she gave birth to Tim on 28th January 1972.
As well as having an affair with Philippa’s best friend Tess, Geoff was a controlling and mentally abusive husband and Philippa fled the marriage in late 1973 when Tim was only a year old. The reason Philippa fled was because she thought Geoff was going to kill her and feared for her life. She tried to take Tim with her but Geoff wouldn’t let her back in to get him after running away, rejecting all her attempts to make contact with or get news of Tim. To her horror, her former best friend Tess even took Geoff’s side. Geoff told her if she ever came back, he would kill her. They officially divorced in 1974 but Geoff told everyone that Philippa had died of breast cancer. Philippa changed her name at random by deed poll - from then on she went by Elaine Jones.
In 2020, now living in Bolton, Elaine was disgusted to learn from newspaper reports that Geoff hadn't changed in the intervening years and that his third wife, Yasmeen, had been painted as the abuser in their relationship and was now facing prison time for stabbing him with a broken wine bottle. Visiting Yasmeen at Norcross Prison by posing as a representative of the Women in Prison charity, Elaine was finally able to help her understand that she had been a victim of coercive control.
In Coronation Street, Elaine found allies in Yasmeen's granddaughter Alya and Tim's wife Sally, but indoctrinated by his father, Tim refused to believe that she was his mother. After being threatened by Geoff, Elaine voluntarily checked herself into Weatherfield General's psychiatric ward. The seemingly unexplained disappearance of Elaine led to some speculating that she had been "dealt with" by Geoff. Eventually, video footage emerged of Geoff hurling verbal abuse at Yasmeen, leading to Tim finally turning against his father. Now convinced that Elaine was telling the truth about everything, Tim retrieved her contact address in Bolton which he had previously discarded but was unsuccessful in locating her.
Months later in December, Tim paid a visit to Elaine in hospital after receiving information about her whereabouts from the police. The pair had an emotional reunion, in which Tim apologised for rejecting Elaine and she agreed to give evidence against her abuser. However, Geoff managed to enter Elaine's room unnoticed once Tim had left. He threatened Elaine's life once again, all the while savagely belittling and bullying her; the incident reduced her to floods of tears. But ultimately undeterred, Elaine found the courage to attend Weatherfield Crown Court and give evidence. As a result of her testimony, plus solicitor Imran Habeeb's ability to track down CCTV footage of Geoff visiting Elaine's hospital ward, the jury were swayed in Yasmeen's favour and she was found not guilty. Geoff later died after falling from the roof of 6 Coronation Street while attempting to chase down his wife.
2020-2022: Making up for lost time
With Geoff finally out of their lives forever, Elaine attempted to comfort those he had left behind. She and Tim began to bond as mother and son for the first time, with Elaine giving Tim all the Christmas presents that she saved up over the years when she wasn't able to see him. Thinking he had his mum's blessing, Tim gave them to a jumble sale, but then discovered that his giveaway had upset Elaine. To spare her feelings, he bought them back from Bernie Winter who had purchased them at the sale.
Elaine began helping Yasmeen recover from Geoff's abuse. She got a job at Speed Daal and in March 2021, she accepted Geoff's old 25% share in the business and Yasmeen's invitation to move into No.6, although that meant Elaine had to rehome Tinkerbell, a Pomeranian that she was fostering. She stayed for two months, leaving when Cathy Matthews moved in when she was targetted by online trolls and her compulsive hoarding caused a mouse infestation at No.6. Elaine accepted Tim's invitation to live at No.4 but, seeing that she was in the way there, she returned to her house in Bolton, which she had kept on. In December, Elaine sold her share in the restaurant to the Nazirs in order to fund her granddaughter Faye Windass's appeal after she was incarcerated for assaulting Ray Crosby.
The following January, Elaine moved back in with the Metcalfes to help Tim convalesce after a triple heart bypass, and started a cardiology course in order to maximise her helpfulness. She and Sally had problems keeping their jealousy from getting Tim stressed, but he liked being fussed over. Annoyed at her continuing presence, Sally set her and Tim up on a movie night to watch Terms of Endearment, but her prank failed when Tim enjoyed watching the film with his mother. Much to Sally’s chagrin, the two spent Valentine’s Day on an 80s movie marathon. Elaine also prevented Sally having sex with Tim as the doctors had forbidden it while he recuperated.
Even after the recuperation period ended, Elaine's presence at No.4 made it impossible for Tim and Sally to get intimate. Tim tried to convince his mum to leave, but she misinterpreted his words and thought he was offering to decorate her room. After returning from a visit to her sister Gina Seddon's to find her mother-in-law even more firmly in charge of her house, Sally ordered her to leave and Elaine walked out in umbrage.
2022 to present: Involvement with Stephen Reid
Elaine was on hand in June of 2022 after Audrey Roberts fell at Trim Up North and spent an entire night trapped underneath a prop motorbike. She and Brian Packham heard her cries and informed Audrey's son Stephen Reid, who broke the door down and rescued her.
Six months later, Elaine encountered Stephen again when the Canadian, forced to work as a takeaway driver due to his fraught financial situation, crashed his moped near her house. She got him to hospital and the two of them grew friendly. Stephen was especially interested in the fact that Elaine had decided to downsize, and would have spare equity from her house. Having heard from his niece Sarah Barlow about how Elaine was coercively controlled by Geoff, Stephen convinced Elaine that that was also how his ex-wife Gabrielle was treating him. She was instantly sympathetic and agreed to lend him money from the sale of her house to get him back on his feet, moving back in with Tim and Sally.
2023: Stephen Reid proposes to Elaine during an acid trip
Once he had Elaine's money, Stephen began avoiding her in order to pursue Jenny Connor. In February 2023, he repaid her with the commission from the Rufus Donahue deal at Underworld, but when she considered buying a penthouse in the Redbank Apartments Stephen suggested they buy it together as friends. The following month, Elaine came to Stephen's rescue when he accidentally dosed himself with LSD and suffered a trip during a presentation at the Chariot Square Hotel. Stephen found himself inadvertently proposing to her, though he got her to agree that their engagement was a secret. Interested in Elaine only for the money, he lied that Gabrielle had defrauded him, and he had no money to put into the flat. Supporting him, she agreed to fund the shortfall on the condition that the flat was in her name.
In April, Elaine let slip about her engagement. Tim became suspicious as to what Stephen wanted from his mother, but she refused to listen to his concerns. Audrey was more approving, finding common ground with Elaine over both of them having had to abandon sons. After Elaine experienced a funny turn, Stephen found out she suffered from high blood pressure and secretly took out an insurance policy in her name. However, he also had a pre-nuptial agreement drawn up to allay Tim's concerns.
Having moved into their new flat at 6 Redbank Apartments, Elaine refused to provide the funds so that Stephen could buy Carla Barlow's share of the factory, leading him to accept to kill her by substituting her blood pressure medication with high caffeine pills. She collapsed unconscious and was left for dead by Stephen, however she managed to revive enough to ring an ambulance for herself.
Stephen paid the first instalment on the life insurance policy from Underworld funds using a cover firm named Seagull Limited, paying Gabrielle to pose as a representative of Seagull in a video call with Carla to make them appear legitimate. When Elaine caught a glimpse of Gabrielle on Stephen's laptop, he told her that she was a client called Claire. Impatient to lay his hands on the money, Stephen forged a suicide letter from Elaine and began to gaslight about her mental state to the people around her, and kept the breach going between her and Tim going in order to isolate her. However, he was thwarted when Tim apologised to him to please his mother. When Stephen discovered that there was a clause in the life insurance policy that would prevent a payout until twelve months after a suicide, he instead planned a hiking accident in the Peak District but on the eve of departure Elaine caught sight of a family photograph of Stephen with his ex-wife and saw that it was "Claire". Realising that he had been lying to her, she ran to Tim for help, and he found both the insurance policy and the forged suicide letter.
Elaine left Stephen and went to stay with a friend in Scarborough, sending a message to Tim that she wanted Stephen to remain at the flat as a rent-paying tenant, but changed her mind two months later, selling the flat to draw a line under her relationship with Stephen. She made a brief return to Weatherfield in September and helped Sally look for a missing Tim after Stephen - exposed as a multiple murderer - locked him in the boot of his cab and abandoned the vehicle in the woods. Tim was found alive but hid the trauma he'd suffered from his family and Elaine, satisfied that Sally could handle Tim on her own, went to stay with a friend.
