Edna Tatlock (née Ellis) was the first wife of Alfred Tatlock and the mother of Joyce.
Edna moved to Coronation Street in 1920 and originally lived at the Rovers Return Inn, where she was a barmaid. Alfred Tatlock was a regular customer and a heavy drinker, and he and Edna soon got close before they married in 1921. The pair then moved into 1 Coronation Street, alongside Alfred's brother Albert and his new bride, Bessie Vickery. The four lived together in slightly cramped conditions.
In 1923, Alfred and Edna became parents to a daughter, who they named Joyce. However, shortly after birth, Joyce contracted scarlet fever and died. Edna also contracted the disease and died a few months later.
Alfred then moved away from Weatherfield and became a station master on the Liverpool Road line, moving into a cottage. In 1936, he married Edith Brown and they produced a daughter, Valerie, in 1942.
