Edna Miller was a gloomy middle-aged woman who worked at the Rovers Return as a cleaner and barmaid from 2000 to 2001.

Initially working in packing at Underworld, Edna was sacked by Mike Baldwin for passing information about their poor working conditions to the Weatherfield Gazette. In 2001, Edna fell ill during an after-hours party at the Rovers and went to sleep in landlord Duggie Ferguson's bed. She was found dead there the next day.

Edna was a barmaid interviewed by Vera Duckworth in June 1998 for the vacant post at the Rovers, much to Jack's dismay. Mrs Miller was sour, and seemed to give the kiss of death for every landlord she had worked for. The job was eventually given to Sandy Hunter.

She was still equally depressive as the laconic "Edna from Packing", working at Underworld in June 2000. She supplied Ken Barlow with information about the factory's poor working conditions which he then used to write negative articles about Underworld. This caused Deirdre Rachid to quit her job when factory boss Mike Baldwin believed her to be responsible. When Edna came clean Mike sacked her and stopped the other workers from going on strike by threatening to withhold their bonuses. Fortunately for Edna she was taken on by Natalie Barnes at the Rovers as a cleaner in September of that year.

In September 2001, Edna and a few of the girls were getting drunk in the Rovers. Shelley Unwin - who had been put in charge for the evening by Duggie Ferguson - asked Edna to lock up when they'd finished. Next day, the girls were all feeling hung-over and Edna was nowhere to be seen. It wasn't until Duggie went for an afternoon nap that he found Edna in his bed - dead.

Background information[]

Joan Kempson initially played Edna for just one episode in June 1998, the character being credited as Mrs Miller, before returning full-time two years later in June 2000.

After Edna was killed off in September 2001, Joan Kempson made an immediate one-off return at the character's funeral, playing her sister Iris Merry. She dyed her hair for the brief appearance. This made her one of only seven actors who have played a regular character in the programme and gone on to make a subsequent appearance in a separate role.
