Dr Chatterjee treated Summer Spellman when she suffered a diabetic attack in April 2022. Summer had been diagnosed as having type 1 diabetes the previous June and had been given instructions as to who to manage her condition with careful dietary conditions. The teenager found these hard to cope with, particularly when using alcohol with her friends and had strayed badly from the path, ending up in Weatherfield General.
Dr Chatterjee gave Summer the good news that she could now be discharged and her guardian, Billy Mayhew, asked whatever else he could be doing to help Summer. The doctor advised that they were playing a reactive numbers game, but it was essential that she keep her blood sugars steady and prioritise her diabetes over all other matters.
Nine months later, in January 2023, Summer was brought in once more but this time the matter had been far beyond her control. She had agreed to be a surrogate mother to Mike and Esther Hargrave who were desperate for a child after having all but bankrupted themselves with IVF treatment, but Summer then made the discovery that Mike had had an affair and had fathered his own son. Summer insisted that Mike came clean to Esther but in a panic, he locked her in a room of his house during which she suffered another diabetic attack. Brought to the hospital under an assumed name by the Hargraves, Summer quickly recovered and once Billy had been alerted by nurse and neighbour Aggie Bailey to her admission to the hospital, he was able to be with her when the doctor informed Summer that everything was now fine and she could go home again.
