The Doctor called at 1 Coronation Street in September 1987 to see Tracy Barlow after she had been sent home from school with stomach pains. She had told Deirdre earlier that day that she felt ill but her mother, preoccupied with council business, paid little attention to her. Ken Barlow summoned the doctor who examined her and quickly diagnosed appendicitis, phoning for an ambulance to take her to Weatherfield General for an immediate operation. Even though he had vigorously supported Deirdre in her election as a councillor, Ken tore a strip off Deirdre for neglecting their daughter in favour of her duties.
