Derek Anderson was a partner of Anderson & Fitch Solicitors and the duty solicitor who represented Tracy Barlow whilst in police custody for the attempted murder of Charlie Stubbs in January 2007. Tracy informed him that the attack on Charlie was an act of self-defence, explained her version of the events and the solicitor advised her to tell the police exactly the same. Tracy was questioned by DS Surrey and DS Campbell. After questioning, the solicitor told DS Campbell that Tracy was going to be staying with her parents while the investigation got underway and didn't pose a risk of leaving the country. She was released on bail pending forensic evidence.

Tracy was re-interviewed by Surrey and Campbell when Charlie died following a cardiac arrest as a result of the injuries he sustained from the attack. She was formally charged with murder. After hearing arguments to grant an application for bail from Mr Anderson which were opposed by the prosecuting solicitor at the preliminary hearing, the presiding Judge Fortune was minded to err on the side of caution and refuse Tracy's application for bail. She was remanded in custody until her trial at Weatherfield Courts of Justice.

The character was credited as "Duty Solicitor" on his first appearance.
