Dennis Proctor was the accounts clerk at Bettabuy's Weatherfield branch. In September 1991, assistant manager Curly Watts made Dennis withdraw £100 from the petty cash to pay Angie Freeman for designing Bettabuy's Weatherfield Carnival float. As the carnival was a charity event, all involved had worked on the float free of charge but Reg Holdsworth had led Angie to believe that she would be paid for her services and so Curly contravened store policy to ensure that she received her fee. Having already passed a cheque for Angie's expenses, Dennis was puzzled by the request but nevertheless carried out Curly's order.

Unfortunately for Curly, an auditor was at the store the next day and found the docket, leading Brendan Scott to arrive from Head Office to investigate him. Forewarned of the auditor's arrival, Curly came in early to retrieve the docket but was interrupted by Dennis and the auditor, Mr Hardiman, as he rooted through the petty cash dockets file, forcing him to abandon his search.
