Dave Hanson worked at Highfield Prison where Roy Cropper was remanded in custody during April 2024 awaiting his trial for the murder of Lauren Bolton. Totally innocent of the crime, and the subject of campaign of harassment by vigilantes after his first arrest was publicised, a shell-shocked Roy withdrew into himself and when Mr Hanson visited his cell to find out if he was vegetarian for his meals, the inmate refused all offer of food. The sympathetic officer then told Roy he could make his statutory phone call but not from the one provided for remand prisoners in his cell as his list of contacts hadn't been approved yet.

The next morning, the gentle Mr Hanson brought Roy a breakfast tray, but this was again refused, as was the suggestion that he take a walk round the landing and work up an appetite. A week later, the officer told Roy he had to eat something but the prisoner puzzled him with his polite explanation that his psychological concerns were overriding his physiological ones. Roy was more upbeat the next time as he had a new bail hearing after Bobby Crawford gave the police new - and untruthful - evidence that he had seen a masked man in Lauren's flat which couldn't have been Roy. As he prepared to go the court, the officer joked with Roy, asking that he hoped he would write a nice online review of the service that he had been given.

Things went badly for Roy though as his bail was again denied. Back in his cell, he was suffering hallucinations from his subconscious of Lauren when she was working in the cafe and felt that there was something in what he was seeing which was a vital clue to the mystery of her disappearance. Weakened by lack of nourishment, he desperately tried to work out what his brain was telling him and, out of character, snapped at Mr Hanson when he came to tell him that it would soon be visiting time. Soon afterwards, he found Roy collapsed in his cell from dehydration and he was rushed to Weatherfield General with Mr Hanson as his accompanying guard. There he prevented Carla Barlow from visiting her friend as Roy had taken her off the list of his approved visitors after finding out that she knew that Bobby's evidence was a lie and a deception.

He did bring Roy a pen and paper though when requested in order that he could wrote down his thoughts about Lauren and what he was saying. Taking pity on the cafe owner, Mr Hanson told Roy that as they weren't in the prison, he could call him Dave instead of the more formal Mr Hanson.
