Daphne-Oxenford

Daphne Oxenford (31st October 1919 - 21st December 2012), played Esther Hayes in Coronation Street from 1960 (making her debut in Episode 2) until 1963 and then returning for guest appearances in 1971 and 1972 when she was last seen at the wedding of Ernest Bishop to Emily Nugent. Born and bred in Barnet she was remembered by generations as the voice of BBC Radio's Listen with Mother, a role she fulfilled for twenty-one years beginning in 1950.

She continued to act into her nineties, appearing in the BBC series The Children of Green Knowe in 1986. In 1990, she appeared in one episode of the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

In recent years, she provided the voice of one of the characters in Big Finish Productions Sapphire and Steel audio plays. In the 2000s she appeared in one episode of Midsomer Murders. In 2008, Oxenford filmed a scene set in the 1970s, for the long-running science fiction show Doctor Who, playing an elderly Agatha Christie, who was dying. Unfortunately, the scene was removed from the finished episode "The Unicorn and the Wasp" before transmission, and became a deleted scene, included as an extra on a DVD.

She was a regular voice on What the Papers Say for many years.
