Daniel Palmer was a young toff who bullied Dennis Tanner when Dennis joined Daniel and his friends Caroline Critchley, Jane Maxwell, Rupert Andrews and Michael Grafton on an outing to Oulton Park in 1965. There at Caroline's invitation, Dennis wasn't a friend of the group but a hairdresser at Gerard's Salon, asked along to the motor racing for a laugh.
When the group was introduced to Dennis, the Tanner-baiting began, with the Weatherfield lad being so desperate to ingratiate himself with his "new friends" that he let them spend all of his money buying them drinks and taking their attempts to needle him without complaint. Daniel was particularly amused by the way Dennis believed everything they said. When in the bar Daniel instigated a conversation about "sand flying" - racing on sand - the group made Dennis believe that it was a real sport, much to their amusement. Later, when before the final race the group decided to move on, Daniel made noises about ditching Dennis, leading Rupert to spin the lad a yarn about them being asked along to an invite-only party.
