Dan was Tracy Preston's friend from London. During a Christmas part in December 1998, Tracy kissed her friend Dan after being informed that Robert and Eve had kissed. Robert witnessed Tracy and Dan's kiss, which led to the breakdown of their marriage and caused Tracy to flee back to Weatherfield in March 1999. Robert and Tracy later reconciled after he followed her back to the street and turned down the advances from another woman, Linda Sykes.
